Since that time farm manager Karl Begrich has carried out some of the experimental farming techniques, which he says, ‘“‘work in harmony. with nature. ‘“*It’s a slow process 3 3150 Cot Boe te 987-6019 was dé building up the farm and us- ing it at the same time,” Begrich says. ‘‘Bio-dynamics is a European method pro- ven to work well. It has been tried by several North American farms with the idea to reduce expenses in farming, to achieve a better yield and a higher quality, of... The bio-dynamic method eloped 14 years ago at Emerson College in Forest Row. Sussex, under the guidance of Pro- fessor Dr..Herbert Koepf. And Clam Bay farm recently hosted a conference, with Koepf, several alymni from Emerson, Vondruska and farmers from the interior of B.C. and Vancouver Island , to discuss bio-dynamics and how to apply it on Clam Bay. The natural fertilizers used in bio-dynamics include ex- tracts from yarrow, dandelion, camomile, oak bark, nettles and valefian. These extracts, which are in a powder form, are added to different layers of compost, such as garden clippings, wood ashes, house waste, chicken and cow manure, earth and mulch. The compost takes about a half year, depending on the temperature, before it is ready to be added to the gardens and fields. ‘‘l prepare my compost in the fall, and it is ready by spr- ing,” Begrich says.
