A&8 - Sunday, July 1, 1984 - North Shore News They voted for the wrong Collins! OUR AGENT was at the Tory nomination do the other night, and the best speech wasn’t made by any of the three hopefuls. They were all as dull as the proverbial ditchwater. The best speech came from Mary Kerr, a fighting lady who should have been a candidate herself. What she said had nothing to do with the big tssues. But in introducing Mac Campbell she went right to her main opposition’s weakest point. She damned Mary Collins for being nothing but a parachutist from wicked old Point Grey. A foreigner, in effect, who had no business poking her nose into a consti- tuency where honest native boys like Campbell and Clark were Offering their valued services. “‘] will tell you what | am not going to do,”’ she yelled. ‘‘lLam not going to nominate a carpet-bagging candidate.”’ Her man, she expostulated with commendable malice, didn’t need a job in Ottawa. Not like some people she could name. Whether this harmed or hindered the Campbell cause 1s hard to say. And it doesn’t matter much. What matters is that someone had the courage to go to the bottom line. Ron Huntington did much the same thing when he talked about the Parti dew Liber-Al dew Canada! Apart from that, we didn’t get much. Ron’s. girl Collins spoke like the PR lady she is, Campbell showed his family, Clark showed his wife, and all agreed that the Grits were no good. Meanwhile, Douglas Mitty Collins was making speeches to himself. And here’s what he was saying in his role of make-believe candidate: ‘‘Friends, my wife’s not here tonight. She hears my speeches every day, and you can have too much of a good ‘get this strai ht by. Doug Collins thing. Not only that, but she’s at home making a new dress, on account of how she can’t afford to buy one, those bastards in Ottawa hav- ing sent us all to. the Hl mailbox |><| Doug killers strike again! Dear Editor: I would hike to express my deep disappointment at the ‘Policy Makers’ of the North Shore News for associating itself with the likes and atti- tudes of someone as offen- sive as Doug Collins. The fact that Mr. Jim Keegstra is being given a pre- liminary hearing which will decide if he should stand trial as a criminal for preaching racial hatred in a_ school system of the Province of Alberta does not seem to me there is to be a simple matter of ‘free speech’. By allowing Mr. Collins to belittle the fact that there were six millon Jewish victims of the holo- caust in Europe permits me to think that your paper aligns itself with these same concepts of preaching racial hatred and anti-Semitism. I take exception to the en- tire column submitted by Mr. Collins in the June 10th Sun- day News, in which he deviously tried to show that some sort of ‘“conspiracy’” at work in North America against the likes of Mr. Keegstra and his hateful supporters. Please could you notify my carrier to refrain from delivering the North Shore News to the above address and my husband and | have decided that we are no longer able to use your ‘‘classifieds’’ for business and personal advertising while Doug Col- lins is printed in your paper. You know what unconscionable swine they are. You know how they’ve screwed English Canada in favor of French Canada. You know how they’ve forced bilingualism and metric ‘on Stong’s, Woodward’s, and the local grocery store. “You know about the deficit and the disappearing dollar. You know how they’ve built airports like Mirabel that airplanes don’t land at, and made Ron Basford’s wife a citizenship judge even though the only thing she ever judged before that was a cake-baking con- test, and how they have such a stinker of a pork barrel that even the pigs can’t stand the smell. You know all that. ‘“*What you really want to know is whether this party's going to copycat the Liberals for ever. The Liberals are the party of the French and the immigrants,. and too many Tories in Ottawa think that that’s the path to glory. Well, we can never beat them at that game. They invented it. ‘*So if you nominate me to-night I won’t be going down to Ottawa to take French lessons at taxpayers’ expense. And I won't be voting with the Libs on things like Bill 169, the anti-free speech bill, from which we've just been rescued by the Na- tional Citizens Coalition. Remember how Chuck Cook said the thing would be easier to police? “‘No, Pll be there to say what you're ‘thinking and anyone who doesn’t like it can damn well lump tu. it could be, of course, that Brian Mulroney will throw me out of the party for being a heretic. But better men have been burned at the stake for less, and someone has to make a start somewhere. Are you with me?”’ The cheering could be heard in Hope, Douglas Mit- ty Collins was nominated by acclamation, the men beat their chests and rGared, half the women in the _ place swooned, and Mary Kerr gave him a big kiss. eit Aah i” Hy ° \\ iY it TINY TU-TU’s FOR TWO & JAZZ BABIES for 2 year old boys & girls with mom or dad participation Satur- days and weekdays KINDERDANCE For boys and giris, 3-4 years old.
