Suicide follow-up
session next week

ORGANIZERS OF February’s successful Ado-
lescent Suicide conference will be holding a
followup meeting next week to discuss possible

plenary session which
followed the February
conference.

Next week's public
meeting will address several
aspects of each category. In
regard to the school system,
it has been suggested that
changes to the curriculum
occur, including counselling
on drug and alcohol use,
choices, life skills and
pregnancy.

In the area of health,
conference participants have
called for the establishment
of a suicide counselling
service, along with the
promoting of more
psychiatrists for adolescents,
programs for victims and
offenders of sexual abuse,
and self help groups for

crisis centre and crisis line
for the North Shore, along
with more treatment facili-
ties for children at risk.

As for the public, con-
ference participants have
suggested that a public
awareness program be
developed to publicize the
needs and contributions of
youth, that teens become
more active in the decision
making of agencies and
committees responsible for
youth, and that investiga-
tions be undertaken to
discover how churches and
concerned parents can help.

The meeting will take
place at the Queen Mary
Community School gym-
hasium on Tuesday, May 29
at 7 p.m.
