Al2 - Wednesday, November 23, 1983 - North Shore News NORTH VANCOUVER MLA Angus Ree has again attacked ICBC but he has revealed that in a report that has yet to be given to the government that ICBC is said to be ‘‘effective and efficient.’’ By NIGEL HORSLEY Ree, speaking to his Capilano constituents at a weekend breakfast meeting, stated: ‘‘I’m still adverse to ICBC because as a Crown Corporation it is a function the private sector can provide. ‘*l don’t believe Govern- ment should be providing ser- vices that the private sector can provide. “‘] sat on the Committee on Crown Corporations for the last years and on the sub- committee and with = par- ticular respect to ICBC we did quite a review on it and at the moment, as chairman of the committee, I have a big report to finalize and file with the Legislature,’’ stated Ree. “It basically found ICBC was fairly effective and effi- cient and I can’t knock itt. Many things they do like any large monoply aren’t as good as they should be. As far as being a money machine | don’t think they should be there to make money off of a selected group of the com- munity that is the motorists. **They should be breaking even,’’ commented Ree. ‘‘They have the ability to make money because they are the sole persons that set the rates. So in essence I'm adverse to ICBC."’ Ree said he was also against the recent proposal to have no-fault insurance. ‘‘I'm definitely against it not because they think the saving on legal fees will pay for the no-fault insurance because I have taken up the battle against lawyers from time to ume and I’m not sym- pathetic to them. “‘T think you'll lose a lot of your benefits,"” he warned. Ree said the benefits were far too broad for such a select group and that another major problem would be the ANGUS REE ... on ICBC attitude such a proposal engenders that attutude of ‘*someone’s going to look after us we don’t care about other peopie’’.
