A8 - Sunday, June 12, 1983 - North Shore News EE mailbox Seatbelts blitz ‘unwarranted’ Dear Editor: Your recent editorial defending the roadside stop- ping and examination of _ motorists for possible seat- belt offences is interesting, but you appear to have over- looked an important point. It is edifying to note that the pro-seatbelters and 1.C.B.C. are able to provide irrefutable proof of the hazards posed by non-users, and it is readily accepted that all reasonable measures must be taken to improve road safety. For I.C.B.C., a tangible means of justifying the present large scale ac- uuvities by the police on the roads of B.C. now becomes a possibility; a reduction in the auto insurance rates would certainly convince me of the need to accept constant police harrassment. We British Columbians have the promise of a possi- ble decrease in road injuries and certainty of a steady in- come into provincial coffers through the medium of monetary fines being levied on offenders. Within the space of one week, I have been stopped and examined on no fewer than four occasions, with the last incident involving the first time experience of be- ing pursued by a_ light- flashing police car in West Vancouver. My criminal ap- pearance, J understand, stems from the fact that | habitually use only the lap Strap fitted to my car, with the other paraphernalia be- ing stowed on hooks provid- ed by the manufacturer. En- thusiastic police officers | can understand, but I cannot countenance a campaign which has repeatedly challenged my privilege of legally using the roads of B.C. without unwarranted interference. Certainly, | am aware that other countries mount similar campaigns. Several police states have perfected Dr. Alfred Bayne was a champion of youth, too Dear Editor: It ts sad that, too often, it is only with a person's pass- ing that we take time to recall all of the good he or she has done. I wish, with respect, to add a few words about a very special person: Dr. Alfred Bayne. Here was a man whose presence touched so many. He worked with untiring dedication for his fellow senior citizens and, in fact, for our entire community. His efforts were never for personal gain. In our many years of friendship I witness- ed him = striving towards many goals and never did he have anything but kind words for all the people he dealt with, even if they were in Opposition. Dr. Bayne’s life went out to more than just seniors, however, as he cared a great deal for young people. I shall always remember, during my first participaton in a civic election, taking up the West Vancouver tradi- tion of standing at the foot of the Lions Gate Bridge. There in the pouring rain we stood, Dr. Bayne at 88 and myself. He was there to show support, but that sup- port wasn't just for me; it was extended to all young people. He had confidence in them and he would always be there to add help and ad- vice. This was an encourag- ment and his life was an ex- ample. While we join with his lov- ing wife Vi and their family in mourning his passing, there is some comfort in knowing that the memories of this outstanding man and the example which he set Shall live on with us. Mark Sager West Vancouver Name Centre for Dr. Bayne Dear Editor: The North Shore said good-bye to Alf Bayne on May 25. Since he died many written and verbal bouquets have been accepted and ap- preciated by his family and his friends. All very heartfelt. all very sincerely phrased == and meant. But words are forgot- 4 in ek ‘th ee ae (en, papers” are memory dims. Therefore | intend to ask the mayor and council of West Vancouver to name the Semors Activity Centre the Dr. Alfred Bayne Semors Acuvity Centre. No one worked harder to fund that centre, no one cared more about his fellow citizens His muslaid, name on that centre would be the ultimate, withering bouquet. non Mary Kerr West Vancouver BUCKLE UP!
