RINGETTE REVIEW _B4 - Sunday, February 13, 1983 - North Shore News Belles runners up in Winnipeg By LUANNE GRIFFIN North-West Vancouver Belles and Jr. Belles, sponsored by the North Shore Optimists, celebrated National Ringette Week by travelling to Winnipeg to participate in the ninth annual River East Ringette Tournament, and the Belle Blades skated away with second place trophies. Coached by Keith Corney and Ron Bennett the girls won their first game against Gateway 5-4 in overtime, then lost to MacGregor 6-3. Coming back, they beat Richmond 5-2 which put them against MacGregor agam in the finals, where they lost 4-3 in Overtime. Goal scorers were Loree Bennett with 8, Sharon Griffin) with 5, Cathy McQuay 2, and Laura Dickinson }. The Jr. Belles Garfield and the Pussycats, having had only one loss all season, entered the Distnct or all- star division of the tour- nament, although they are a house-league A Team. The girls did themselves proud, winning their first game against Thudner Bay in overtime 8-7. They lost to Sherwood Park, Edmonton, 4-3 which put them against Thunder Bay again, who turned the tables on the first game and beat our girls 5-4. Goal scorers for the Jr. Belles were Tania Green with 4, Terri Scott 4, Allison Bennett 3, Kathy Wallace 2 and Laurie Griffin 2. The girls were coached by Beth Bennett and _ Rick Borman. The girls were billeted in Winnipeg and_= enjoyed meeting new friends and renewing old friendships even in the -30 degree weather, and are looking forward to some of the teams returning here for our In- terprovincial Tournament March 18-20. The B.C. team will compete in the Canadian championship at Sherwood Park, Alberta, against seven other provincial teams, from Apni 4 to 10. Last year B.C. placed fourth.
