> C6 - Wednesday, April 7, 1982 - North Shore News Marching to the Malvinas Or, frolicking in the Falklands For the past few weeks, items have been appearing in the daily papers about a small group of islands in the South Atlantic off the coast of Argentina. Known as the Falklands Islands to the British (who have been in possession since 1833) and the Malvinas to the Argentines (who have been crying, “foul” since 1833) they are now a war zone. Just goes to show that when kids have nothing better to do they'll get into mischief! If you have any notion about the Falkland Islands (sorry — Malvinas) being a South Sea island paradise, forget it. A more bleak version of paradise would be hard to imagine. Think Alcatraz and you'll be on the right track. I visited Port Stanley a few years ago purely by ac- cident. The ship 1 was on was bound for Cape Horn and that’s what I wanted to see. A note in small print at the bottom of the brochure trayel- wise by Barbara McCreadie (in Portuguese, yet) said, “Islands Malvinas, weather permitting”. So, the weather permitted — more or less — and there we were. Port Stanley wasn't prepared for eight hundred Argentines and me. We ambled along the tiny main street at a forty-five degree angle, bracing into the wind. Everyone walks that way down there. Craving souvenirs, the passengers flocked into the few small shops, arguing loudly with the proprietors over the value of pounds and pence. I stood well back until the lull and then asked, in English, the price of a small tray. The shopkeeper looked at me in_ horror. “You're English!” “No, Canadian.” “How did you get in with THAT lot, then?” His scorn for Argentines was un- mistakable. To emphasize his dislike, he refused to sell to anyone who didn't speak English even though he proved that he could speak Air employees buy a ‘first’ The CP Air Employees 1982 special fund-raising project has provided a first for Canada. English? Port Stanley is more British than Picadilly, even to the pub and the dartboard. Children are schooled on the islands in the primary grades and then sent to England or Buenos Aires to complete their education. The average Argentine doesn't care a damn about oil but it raises his national pride that Britain owns one rock of what he considers part of his country. The British, in turn, believe that No Muss, No Fuss to let go of the islands would be a disgrace. Pesos in Port Stanley? Never! At a time when Britain's pride is taking a beating on the home front, I wouldn't want to be an Argentine soldier keeping the flag in the Falklands. Instant nail remover with lanolin.
