Dear Editor: The . residents of Deep Cove are angry and bitter. They feel they’ve been led down the proverbial. garden. path by North Vancouver District Council in what many of them regard as a cynical display of political duplicity. by their elected representatives. They live in a unique and beautiful setting that is at once both residential community and recreation area. That’s why they moved there in the first place. That's why they want to ) keep it that way. They were promised a Community Plan in which they would have input. They understood this to mean that they would be able to maintain the unique features of their community. Then along Came a. developer, or rather a partnership of. developers, one of whom _was Gordon Gibson. They bought some land in Deep Cove for a big commercial and high rise development. Now this velopment would com- pletely change the low density nature of Deep Cove. It will block out the view for many residents. It will cause massive traffic problems. The housing it contains will be affordable only for the well-to-do. Gordon Gibson is a “big wheel” in North Vancouver with a lot of “clout”. Council meckly agreed to let him go ahead with his development. I-was the only member of council to vote against it. The residents felt betrayed. They called a public meeting and raised hell with ‘council. They demanded a moratorium on all development until they get their plan. The mayor and aldermen promised to At this stage, council had only two ways out of the dilemma it had created. It out. the developer. It did neither. In a legal sense the case appears closed. The developer has apparently broken no laws, even if he . did, initially, reveal only the first ‘stage of his two-stage development plan. Council has brokén no laws——there is Bo, Jaw. against breaking promises, or commitments to residents. It's another of those classic cases of developer versus the people, with council on the side of the developer. The developer makes a mint— the people are left with the consequences. But politically, the issue is far from settled. Council has opened. up a hornet's nest and now they'll have to continue facing the hornets. The issue will be debated once more in council. Council's action has made a mockery of the whole idea could down-zone the whole. area, or it could have bought - of a Community . Plan for Deep Cove, or for, that matter, for North Vancouver ‘District. The Deep Cove development even violates council’s own decision of a moratorium on further development of the Seymour area until the new bridge actoss the Seymour River is built. As far as the people of Deep Cove are concerned, council is not on the side of the people. Council has lost all credibility in this com- munity. I am sure that a Com- munity Plan, based on what the people of North Van- couver District want, will be, a central issue in the November municipal elections. And I wouldn't be surprised if the voters make some changes in the people they elect to assure this kind of a plan.
