statement after reading
about the incidence of crank
calls to the ministry's Zenith
phone number that allows
callers to anonymously
identify cases of child abuse.

“These crank calls are
obscene phone calls in the
most serious social sense of
the word,” the therapist at
the University of Victoria,
says. Under the current
legislation each and every
hot-line cali must be = in-
vestigated. There is no
recourse of a legal or social
service nature for a family
falsely accused.

provincial Ministry of Human Resources in its
present form resembles some of the ideas talked
about in Orwell’s “1984” says Professor Tom
Garfat (Child Care), a specialist in family therapy.

children were taken to the
family physician, who again
found no evidence of abuse.

The family was then in-
formed that a mandatory
hearing before health care
and social service
professionals would take
place, and that their names
would remain on file for
seven years. The name of the
person making the call in
this case was kept con-
fidential, as is required by
the legislation.
