And, say two experts in the field, if the = right equipment was available, voice prints could be recorded and filed to obtain the same kind of positive identification provided by fingerprints. , y British Columbia linguist Henry Warkentyne§ and Craig Dickson. a graduate student at the University of Victoria, have given themselves three years, at a cost of about $45,000 per year, to prove the theory. They are seeking financial help. Working out of a laboratory at the university, Warkentyne and Dickson are building a computer- controlled speaker recognition system capable of correctly recognizing and identifying the differeneces in human speech patterns Scientiftc arguments about the theuvretical daf- ferences have been going on for years. Warkentyne said but if his project ts sue cessful, ou) will bring the arguments toanend Royal wedding rumour “Our appruach its to try and settle the = scientific arguments by isolating those speech sounds of an in- dividual which cant be shared with other voices,” he said. Using a computer, Warkentyne and Dickson are subjecting taped voices of volunteers to mtensive comparison and analysis in an attempt to catalogue the differences. “Identifying and tsolatng the exact sounds to be studied is a major part of the work at this stage of the project,” Dtekson said. He said the emphasis is being placed on aasal consonants, such as "N° and” ‘M’ and the fricative con- sonants ‘S' and ‘Z’. Speakers may easily vary certain speech sounds by altering the pitch, tone patterns and speed of ut- terance or by changing the movements of jaw, tongue and lps. Dickson said. But they cannot control the nasal consonants It as thought that) these speech sounds are controlled by the anatomical = of habitual differences between people he said) They cannot be consistently altered by ing voices people attempting to disguise their voices or by emotional stress and Ulness. “Every human speech mechanism ts thought to be shghtlv different and has different resonating Capacities for producing sounds,” Dickson said. “Just as itis highly unlikely that there are two absolutely identical human faces, it is highly improbable that two speech tracts would ever be exacitly the same =o and produce identical vibrations and resonances.” Warkentyne said if their project is successful, the resulting system would be useful to banks and law- enforcement agencies. “Tt would enable banks to identify people wishing to cash cheques by telephone.” he said. Warkentyne said the process would control access to Computer storage banks where entry was through a spoken word and could be used as oan identification system by law-enforcement apenctes adding that the RCMP had expressed tn- terestin the proyect back in news again LONDON (UPI a royal match Prince Charles heir to the Bontush throne. and Princess Manec Astrid of bourg. are cropping up Rumors of between Luxem aone¢ again The News of the World said Sunday the attractive daughter of Grand Duke Jean and Grand Caroline had a private audience with Pope John Paul ET last week that church sources believed centered on l Yuse Press problwims ol a miaca Marriage Marie Astrid Ma Wwo4 C atholec someday Charles well succeed this mother Queen ft hvabeth as head of the Church of Bong bad Ethie royal faastily has previously denied there were Fassuvady (dase cissterers com tthe matter Hot the newspaper s4Qnd the queea has Lavored Marie Astrid plincess was Ls and has a sanmee the Photograph oot her ay tthe queens apartment al Balmoral the roval home un Se othand Queen Ehivabeth VS scheduled te meet the Pops during a visit to Ttaly later on the vear The News of the World sand bor Robert Rune sc who walk bec one the archbishop oft Can terbury primate oot ihre Cdr hh oth anpdaaned ser ule sprung Satel the worded cnet obyeot tea mined manrriaye foor CO Whades This lady will be calling you.
