32 - Sunday, January 6, 1991 - North Shore News From page 31 less fun. Perhaps the worst was a couple I met on a Mediterranean cruise — he sulked in their cabin for seven days while she carped to anyone who would fisten. Her favorite phrase was, ‘*He’s meaner than dog dirt!"* The first step in getting a reluc- tant traveler to move is finding out why. For some, it’s fear of flying. So take a bus. Others dislike spending money. That’s tough to deal with, but the answer may lie in the challenge of saving gradually using innovative methods — clipping coupons, fill- ing a coin jar (with those silly loonies, coin jars build up quite quickly), skipping the weekly din- ner out or taking on a sraali part- time job like a paper route. Don’t start laughing at that one. 1 know one couple who did just that and found that they not only financed their travels but got slim and trim from the walking. Added to that, the time they spent walking together gave them a chance to talk — which had been sadly lacking. One of the many reasons keap- ing people at home is that some need to justify anything they do. The idea of ‘R and R’ on the beach in Hawaii is repulsive. They ought to be home cleaning out the garage. For these people theme travel is the answer. Everyone has some special in- terest and the wise partner can build on it. Unfortunately, there’s nothing much to suggest if his hobby is locking himself in the bathroom with Playboy, but here are a few suggestions for those with more serious interests. Music: * There are festivals all over the world featuring every sort of music. Germany excels in classics as does Austria. Take the country music train to Nashville or Woolco Craven, Sask. Jazz it up in New Orleans or head for the pipes in Edinburgh. Food: ® Take a cooking course in France or attend a world’s chili cooking contest in Texas. One of the most interesting tours I’ve heard about was put together by a couple who chose i0 of the most famous five-star restaurants in rural France and visited each for lunch —- a lot cheaper than dinner. ® Food lovers often have an inter- est in wines. Most of the fine wineries have regular tours — look for those in France, Ger- many — the Barossa Valley in Australia has wonderful tours as does California's Napa Valley. I had my first taste of ‘*cham- pagne’’ there when I was very young. Books: © If you have a favorite classical author you can be sure that the birthplace has cashedin on a sure-fire tourist attraction — con- sider Stratford-on-Avon. Dickens is easy to track down and so is Mark Twain. © Do you have a favorite novel? One of my favorites is a book by Leon Uris — Mila 18, a fictional representation of the Warsaw ghetto during the Second World War. It’s a book a friend of mine also loves and we've often said that it would be a wonderful ex- perience to go and take a look at the locale, as chilling as it might be to visit Auschwitz. © If your taste runs to Gone With The Wind, you won't find Tara, but a sweep through the American Southeast ought to fill you up with enough similar plantations — many turned into restaurants — and civil war museums. History: © Be specific. Taking a run at British history in general will leave you with museum fatigue. Instead, pick one ruler, era or event. Henry the Eighth is a favorite of mine and I’ve tracked him down \¢ > wednesday Jan. 11 * Fabricland Alive ‘91 > friday Jan. 11 Watch for our Real Estate Homes section. > sunday Jan. 13 Safeway Shoppers Drug Mart * Super Valu Save-On-Foods If you miss any of these flyers call North Shore News Distribution 986-1337 ¢ delivered 10 selected areas only 7 re nt i. eet VORLE OF MeCATTM AMD WEST MARCOUVES ews SUNDAY + WEDNESDAY - FRIDAY TRAVEL Tailor travel plans to fit needs all over the place. Another favorite is Bonnie Prince Charlie and a visit to Culloden was very moving — even though Brian stood there with his, ‘Are we having fun yet?”’ look. © I'd suggest a visit to Egypt but not while Bush is still mustering the troops. Hobbies: © You may not be really excited about old cars but if your partner is it's a good excuse to drag him to Reno (Harrah’s Antique Car Collection is outstanding, even though it's been cut down in size) or Las Vegas ({ love the collection at the Imperial Palace). ¢ Trains?
