And they’re inviting everyone to come out and fearn what they can do to help take the bite out of crime in North Vancouver. The Nationa) Night Out cam- paign was first introduced in the United States 10 years ago as a way for potice to celebrate the fight against crime in the different states. Last year the North Vancouver RCMP decided they too should host a National Night Out party and the 1992 event attracted over 2,000 people. Const, Marty Blais said a key focus of this year’s National Night Out party will be to encourage the general public to become involved in helping the police fight crime. “Without the public, there can be no community policing. We want to show the community what police services are available to them,’’ said Blais. He added that the police will have several displays and demonstrations at the National 4&4 We want to show the community what police services are available to them. 99 Night Out party which will serve to educate the public about the different branches of the RCMP, Helping the RCMP with this year's National Night Out party will be several corporate sponsors including Royal Insurance, BC Hydro, Air B.C., 7-Bleven, McDonald's and other local businesses who have doauted a variety of prizes. “It is put together by the Block Watch participants and looked after strictly by volunteers who have a good reason to celebrate, “Statistics show that over the last two years there has been a 53% decrease in residential bur- glaries in North Vancouver City and District,"* said Blais. This year’s National Night Out campaign was organized in part by civilian coordinator Cynthia Dewald. Sone of the displays included this year will be on the RCMP’s Block Watch program, the police’s drug section, the burglary unit, the traffic and CounterAuack section, the RCMP marine unit, the RCMP helicopter unit, the RCMP dive team, the police's bicycle patrol section, the general investigation section, the special Projects unit and CrimeStoppers. Demonstrations will be provided by the RCMP’s bomb disposal unit and police dog unit. There will also be a variety of children’s entertainment available such as hot air balloon rides, BC Hydro bucket rides, a blown up castle, face painting and a child identification program sponsored by London Drugs. Some outside agencies taking part will include the B.C. Am- bulance Service, the North Shore Search and Rescue team, the Ca- nadian Armed Forces, Ports Canada and Canada Customs. “This event will be successful only if the public attends to join a crime prevention program so we can keep this area of ours pro- tected against urban decay,’’ said Blais.
