Keep safety in mind
when installing pools

OUTDOOR POOLS, whether
they ure in-ground or above-
ground, usually become the cen-
trepiece for family fun and gath-
erings in the warm weather. And
although adults like to think they
keep a steady eye peeled for trou-
ble when young children are
around, drowning remains the
leading cause of accidental death.

Pool safety experts have a few
safety tips to pass along.
© Install a climb-proof fence or
barrier that is at least five feet
(1.5 m) high. And make sure you
can see over this enclosure into
the pool area from the house.

® Choose gates that are self-clos-
ing and self-latching — the kind
that resist being pried open by
children’s hands.

@ Keep the doors and windows
that lead to pool areas locked at
all times. You might consider in-
stalling an alarm that sounds a
warning when a door or window
to the pool has been opened.

@ Purchase a motorized pool
cover. Bubble blanket covers often
have areas at their edges where
children can slip underneath.

© Keep life preservers, life jackets
and a shepherd's crook (for
reaching out to a floundering per-
son) next to the pool. A telephone
should also be handy at poolside
for emergencies.

Prepare properly for painting jobs

HOW SHOULD wood siding be
prepared for painting?

First, you need to clean the sur-
faces that are to be painted.

Scrub down the area with a
solution of tri-sodium phosphate,
bleach and hot water. Rinse well
and Jet dry thoroughly,

Scrape off all loose paint (if
any) by using a wire brush and
scraper.

You could use a powerful
pressure washer to accomplish
both of these tasks in one step.

Now you need to repair any
loose boards (or replace rotten
ones), and reset any exposed nail
heads. If you are using any new
nails, be sure they are a galvaniz-

ed type.

Also, caulk and spackle any
cracks, voids, or other holes to
ensure there are no spots where
water can penetrate the surface.
Sand rough areas or where spackle ©
needs to be feathered out.

You can now start to paint, us-
ing a good-quality alkyd primer
on all exposed wood surfaces.

Allow two days to dry before
top coating.

Your choice of top coat should
be an alkyd enamel.

if you wanted to change from
alkyd enamel to a latex top coat,
then you would want to use the
alkyd primer on the entire surface.
