North Shore Lions prefer te Marcie Good News Reporter mgood@nsnews.com THE financial troubles of the Lions Society of B.C. have caused several local clubs to shy away from supporting the provincial organiza- tion. While the Mt. Seymour Lions club has traditionally “shaken the can” for Timmy's Telethon, aa annual fundraiser for the Lions - Society, this year they chose to collect at Jocal malls for North Shore Search and Rescue instead. Over wo days, the club raised just under $10,000. In past years, about the same amount has been raised for the Lions Society of B.C. . “The good Lions are still trying to do good Lions things,” said Richard Stott, sec- retary of the Mc. Seymour chapter. “And we're not going to have anything co do with the downtown Lions until they clean up their act.” . He was referring, to the past two years of miserable business decisions, which left the once-powerful organization with a crippling $8.5-million debr. | ; A $3.8-million hole was left by a failed chartered cruise, leading to the resignation of executive director Bill Townsend. . Several embarrassing incidents came to light, such as a Hawaiian cruise taken by Townsend and eight famiiy members. He had not paid for the $20,000 trip. After a 23-year run, the telethon was cancelled this year because the production costs were greater than the funds raised. But the dilemma for many local clubs is that members don’t want to see the Lions Society's worth- while causes fike the three Easter Seal camps left wanti- ng. tort says his club dis- PETER Black is a mem- cussed whether to donate ber of the this year's holiday can-shak- | Vancouver Lions Ctub. ing money to Camp Squamish, which hosts chil- dren with physical disabilities. But the way the organization is currently structured, all funds must go through the central office. Because several Mt. Seymour members had served on the board of directors of the provincial Lions before the troubles began, tempers were still too high to ler a cheque go “downtown.” That's one of the changes that local clubs are asking for, says Gaye Leblanc, the North Shore zone chairman and a member of the West. Sunday, December 31, 2000 ~- North Shore News - 9 North Van Mountain Lions. She says the new manage- ment of the Lions Society, which is now headed by Stephen Miller, has guaran- teed local clubs that if they donate money to a specific cause, such as the camps or Easter Seal House, it gets there. While the provincial Lions Sociewy, chartered jn 1952, is a completely separate organization from local clubs, Leblane said thev teel tainted by association. “Yes, it hurts us,” she said. “Tt caa’t not hurt us. But the community has been understanding.” After asking all seven clubs fundraise locally in her zone for a list of money they had donated to local causes over the past decade, she found the funds totalled more than SI million. Only a very small number had gone to the provincial Lions. But the general feeling among local club members is that the boycott is temporary. “I think we should be saying, ‘We're not going to support the society until we see it back on track,” because what's going to hap- pen to Camp Squamish?” said Peter Black, who founded the West Vancouver Lions. His club has supported the telethon in the past by cooking hot dogs and hamburg- ers at the event, and denating proceeds. “I don't think you can dispel the fact that there’s been 22 or 23 vears of tremen- dous fundraising. “But it’s a hiccup, L tell vou.
