SHUTTERS & BLINDS “Uf you buy shutters anywhere else you'll be making a mistake!” I'VE had some ques- tions regarding employ- ees of security compa- nies: Are they trustwor- thy, what employment opportunities are avail- able and do employees carry guns? In B.C., the Attorney General licenses security busi- nesses and their employees under the authority of the Private Investigators and Security Agencies Act (PISA). There are six different cate- gories which include: security patrol, locksmith, security con- sultant, private investigator, alarm service and armoured car service. Just because a company uses the word “security” in its name does not necessarily mean it is licensed. An example would be wine dow bar or window film com- panies. To obrain a licence, a company must prove that the owners or managers have the experience, training and quali- fications to operate the busi- ness, A bond (up to $15,000) is posted with the AG and a licence is issued only after an in-depth investigation. Liability insurance is not required so it is up to the individual companies to obrain it. Once licensed, a business can hire and apply for individ- ual licences for their employ- ees. Depending on the partic- alar licence applied for, an individual is required to take specialized training, Security guards must take an approved course and be certified, alarm technicians must take an apprenticeship for 18 months if formal train- ing at BCIT is completed or three years if not. Alarm sales people are also licensed but nv training is required. All licence appticants arc fingerprinted by the police and a criminal history check is donc. The results are sent to Victoria, and the Security Programs Division of the Attorney General will make a me Visit Our Showroom ert), Vancouver 2758 Rupert Street Grandview & Ru _ & sound decision whether or not itis in the public interest to have this person licensed. Once issued, a security employee must carry a licence and company identification while at work, They must produce it on request. Ifyou have any concerns about the validity of a licence, you can contact the Security Programs Division in Victoria at (250) 387-6981. For those wishing to obtain employment in the security industry, an employce licence application must origi- nate from the licensed busi- ness that will be hiring you. Once licensed you can work for one other security compa- ny providing it is the same cat- egory of licence. You will need training, depending on which part of the industry you would like to work in before being hired. Be sure to investigate job prospects before investing thousands into a training course. As for carrying firearms, an armoured car guard is the only civilian job in B.C. that allows a person to be armed for their personal protection. The only other occupations that may carry firearms are peace offi- cers or special constables. Security guards and private investigators have never car- tied guns to my knowledge. - The fact that the AG has disarmed the auxiliary police in B.C. feads me to believe it will probabiy be a very long time before we see security officers with firearms.
