Ne / ® Cavid Taylor Contributing Writer SEYMOUR River resi- dents say noise and pol- lution from an industri- al site in the neighbor- hoed is making lives miserable and posing a major health hazard. They're frustrated that no level of government secms to be able to help them. On Monday residents presented a petition of more than 120 names to North Vancouver District Council. They want council to investigate ways to force the business located at 561 Seymour Boulevard to clean up its act. “It’s been a war zone for years,” said Charlie Seaton, who lives near the site. “The noise and dust is just unbearable, but no one seems to be.able to do any- thing about it.” The industrial site is home to several businesses, includ- ing North Shore Sandblasting FACTORY FUT and Coating, and Heritage Stone Sales. Seaton says sandblasting and heavy equipment create huge amounts of dust and noise at all hours of the dav and night. He's worried about the health effects from old fead paint particles in the dust. The problem is that the businesses are located on Squamish Nation lands, and so are out of the jurisdiction of most government agencies. “We've approached them as neighbors many times and they just thumb their noses at us,” Seaton said. “It’s ridicu- lous. They could put a toxic waste dump in there and no one would do anything until people started dropping off.” Counci] was sympathetic to the plight of the neigh- bors, but cautioned there might not be much they could do to help. “This is a difficule situation,” said Coun. Trevor Carolan. “We have a limited capacity to respond short of rewriting the S97 lecledes: said pine sofa hed (ase, ON Entrance ts ear tane Moa. Ernie Crist argued that noise and pollution bylaws ought to be enforced, no matter whose land is in question. “These people have been suffering for a long time.” he said. “We can’t stand idly by and Set this happen.” Mayor Don Bell agreed, saying something should be done for the neighbors, even though council lacks teeth to enforce regulations. “I think we should formally raise our concerns with them,” he said. “It’s in their best interests to have a good relationship with us in the future.” Council vored unanimous- ly to support the neighbors and investigate what options are available to solve the problem. Seaton said the move was a start, but he’s frustrated that the problem has been allowed to fester for years. “There are many fami- lies living in. the area,” he said. “Who knows what this is doing to the kids.” Friday, July 10, 1998 — North Shore News — S a TOYOTA BC DEALERS Keith A..Cameron RPGR | EM Aan . | .
