Wednesday, April 24, 1996 — North Shore News ~ 34 Celebrate sound of silence Sources of noise targeted by Right to Quiet Society BY LAYNE CHRISTENSEN Community Reporter THERE'S FAR too much noise in our neighbor- hoods and places of work say the members of Right to Quiet, the Society for Soundscape Awareness and Protection. Fourteen-year member Rose Naumann considers lawn-mowers and feaf-blow- ers among the worst noise polluters, though she also wags her finger at the Dundarave and Ambleside businesses she frequents. ‘The music played in many stores and restaurants is too loud and “totally unnecessary,” she “says. _ “There are wonderful nat- ‘ural sounds —- tae ocean, the wind —- or why not have a lit- tle conversation instead of music?,” reasons the 76-year- old, who will recognize International Noise Aware- ness Day, today, April 24, by performing. a truly quiet activity — sewing. Naumann, of West Vancouver, traces her sensi- tivity to noise back to child- hood when she endured a brother’s trumpet lessons. Today, when she visits the movie theatre she stuffs Kicenex into her cars, “because the previews are far too loud, as if everybody were deaf.” You see, that's the point say noise-awareness “dvo- cates like Jean Taylor of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, North Shore branch. Noise isn’t just a nui- sance, it's a health concern. The effect of repeated sound overstimulation is cumulative over a lifetime, Taylor wars, adding that youths who frequent rock concerts or blast their car stereos and Walkmans are at greatest risk. “That young person deing it day after day after day will probably end up with hearing loss,” she says. Fraser and other partici- pants of International Noise Awareness Day will be observing a moment of silence today. Their “Quiet Diet,” takes place between 2:15 to 2:16 p.m. and is meant to highlight the impact of noise on hearing and health.
