Oliviero Toscani, the edi- torial director of Colors, is the creator of Benetton’s success- ful series of graphic photo- graphic advertisements. Since 1982, the ads have featured many provocative images, for example, a man dying of AIDs, the bloodied clothing of a Bosnian fighter and a photo of horses copulating. Said Makin on Monday, “That kid had obviously nor consented to be in that pic- ture. It’s nor like taking a pic- ture of an AIDs patient or ele- phants mating or whatever else Benetton thinks they're clever about. FUN TO DRIVE, OMY CAR. “They took a picture of this lire boy. Anybody who knows babies knows. they -obably had to keep hint sit- ung there for quite a long time with lights on him and the camera there and waiting until he decided to empty his Wadder and then shoot a bunch of shorts. Eden’: think the kid) even liked this, because he’s crving. They were intentionally cruel to this baby and exploited him. They intentionally got him urinat- ing to focus attention on his genitalia, so it has specitic sex- ual intent.” “The problem is to call it pornography, you have to prove the magazine has a sex- ual intent. This magazine did- n't primarily,” Makin said. Said) North Vancouver RCMP Const. Heidi Holtman, “It was reviewed by the experts. The magazine was determined not to be porno- graphic in nature or obscene.” The = magazines were returned to MeNews last Thursday.
