It is enti- tled Homefront: Shipbuilding and the North Vancouver Conimunity 1939-1945, NORTH SHORE HERITAGE By Dorothy Foster Many people in the community were involved in war work during this time in one way or another, or have a parent, grandparent or relative that was. My grandfather and uncle worked for a short time at Burrard Dry Dock in North Vancouver during the war years, and my mother was trained and worked in Vancouver for Neon Engineering, making precision parts for radar and machine guns. This display is not only for those who lived at this time; itis also meant to educate those born since then. It was a time when North Vancouver was caught up in some- thing larger than life. North Vancouver played a vital role in Canada’s war effort because of the shipyard facility located on the the waterfront at the foot of Lonsdale. It was called Wallace Shipyards, after its founder. Alfred Wallace. Ltd.: in 1977, the Burrard Yarrows Corp.; and in 1985, Versatile Pacific Shipyards Inc. Burrard Dry Dock, as it was called during the Second World War, had to expand its shipbuilding facili- ties to meet the needs of the war.
