4 - Friday, July 15, 1994 - North Shore News BCR Gleneagles deal not enough, WV residents say Purchase more lots, council urged WEST VANCOUVER’s pro- posed land acquisition deal with BC Rail is not good enough for some residents of the Gleneagles-Eagleridge aed. WEST VANCOUVER DISTRIGT COUNCIL By Maureen Curtis They want 15 more of the !8 remaining BCR residential lots for public use. Mast people at the July 11 pub- lic hearing into the proposed rezon- ing and development permit appli- cation for BCR were pleased with the negotiated agreement. The deal would allow West Vancouver to acquire 15 acres (6 hectares) of the 26-acre (10.4- hectare) BCR right-of-way, includ- ing most of the Seaview Walk cur- rently leased by the municipality. By the terms of the agreement, BC Properties would be able to develop {& of the approzimately 40 lots the Crown corporation claimed it could fit into the casement earlier this year, Several people urged West Vancouver District Council to negotiate for the purchase of as many more of those 18 remaining lots a8 possible. “This is forever. It’s not a lot of money when you're talking forev- es.” said Dennis Perry. He, Brian Thompson and others argued that eight lots between Eagleridge Drive and Orchill Road would be vital to the future of Seaview Walk because they would allow for future connection of the _walk to Horseshoe Bay and a more level access from Marine Deive for the elderly and less able. The cost of the eight lots, at $1.6 in total, would be 1.5 times more than West Vancouver spends to acquire a singie lot in’ the Ambleside area for Seawalk expan- sion, stid Thompson. Residents also recommended that West Vancouver acquire a southern parcel of two lots near Gleneagles Drive which is narrow, steep and rocky, and would require “extensive clearing and blasting.” The lots would cost an estimated $375,000. The same group of people lob- bied for the acquisition of five more lots in the northern part of the easement which West Vancouver already has the option of buying for just over $1.1. The five-lot parcel, surrounded by public land, is currently used for B.C. Ferries overflow parking and would be a good site for the future western recreation centre, it was argued. The group, consisting of Perry, Thompson, Barbara Petit and Jim Belsheim, argued that the cost of acquisition was justified. “many of the residents who live at this end of the municipality feel that we often get the short end of the stick when it comes to municipal spending,” said Thompson. Perry questioned why the West Vancouver-BCR negotiated pro- posal had to be considered in July, in such haste, and said that there are rumors that it was a “closed- door deal.” Other residents stressed the importance of a continuous off- road pathway, particularly for the See Seaview Walk page 5 Perfect Balance An impressive Home Theatre System doesn’t have to be expensive.
