Hob Sinith wis recently quoted in the North Shore News as say- ings “There is nothing wrong with the foad,” Last year fcomplained about the quality, appropriateness and wastage of food being served to the senior cilizens al Evergicen House, Mr. Smith's sveretary informed me that “they have never had any complaints about the food, and that there wasn'ta problems” I hope thal someone close to Mr. Smith is unfortunate enough to con- sume this daily feast in the near future, so thal positive change may soon come about. Punderstand that there wete nae ovations al Evergreen Teuse in 1092 and 1493, and that they spent quite a few thousand dallits on it new Kitchen fange “lo onike the food more tender” Surely oat pare ents and friends in ivergreen House and Lions Gate Hospital deserve better than “cooked and chilled at Burnaby Hospital, then plated and reheated in Evergreen kitchen.” As one of the employees remurked, “all the nutrients will be cooked out” The North Shore is classed as a disister zone, hence we should need all the facilities avail- able if anyihing major occurs. Valerie Whitton North Vancouver Government pickpockets Dear Editor: Prior to the election last year, it was not at all unusual to open the North Share News and leara that one or another of our local ‘Members of Parliament) had returned from Ottawa to dole out largess in the form of grants and loans to local enterprises. * Possibly much of this has ceased as we are now represented by Opposition members, but we would be naive to assume that the new government members will be any less diligent in seeking to divert the bounty, which is no doubt still available, to their own ridings. Sadly, this kind of patronage is hot given the attention it deserves, Discrimination van take positive as well as negative forms, and the dis- crimination that singles aut some organizations.on which to bestow favors, and not others. is equally offensive. Much of the responsibili- ty must lie with the politicians, but this does not absolve the recipients. We may deplore the way gov- ernment reaches into our pockets, but lite will change until those who reach into governments” pock- ets mend their ways. Bill Tomlinson North Vancouver Housing concessions praised Dear Editor: - I applaud your, March 25 article on the proposed amendments to the District of North Vancouver’s single-family housing regulations. If our current council were in ‘place in the Victorian era, small Squat farmhouses would be the “heritage homes” of today. Our society is based on individ- ual expression — not the collec- tive tastes of those who surround you. / Being forced to build or reno- vate a home “to ensure that con- struction fits with the general char- acter” of an area, clearly violates my constitutional right to individ- ual expression. It is not the District of North Vancauver’s, or my neighbor’s, right to dictate what style or char- acter my home shall be. Steve Toporowski North Vancouver A trash collection suggestion Dear Editor: The recent limits placed on the amount of refuse that municipal crews will remove in West Vancouver is well intentioned. It should, however, be fine- tuned in order to be more consider- ate of exceptions. As an example, | recently missed my pick-up time. (The truck usually arrives at 7 a.m.) This meant that the following week I had an excess of refuse which the crew did not remove because of their weekly limit. What should be done with this excess? The alternatives all seem illegal, unsanitary or inconvenient. _ It seems to me that in order to be fair, the municipality might issue every homeowner several tags which may be used at their discre- tion during the year to denote an excess pickup.
