O A casual observer it
might seem that Ted
Kingan’s precisely re-
alized ‘landscapes’ are
not really paintings at all but
supernatural snapshots
purloined from some alien
_realm.

One can visualize the North
Vancouver artist withdrawing into
his meticulously organized study,
closing his door to the pedestrian
traffic of everyday reality and
calapulting himself via some

Magical mind-warp into a unique
. world inaccessible to: anyone but

Once there — floating like an
absent-minded surveyor in freefall

.— he's able to activate the ex-
“traordinary bio-mechanism of his

“mind's eye, and “photograph,”
‘sometimes at close range, some-

"times at a great distance, a dimen-
. sion no camera could ever be ex-
pected to enter: an undulating
domain bathed not in dense

_ watery fluid but cool, clear,
ethereal light. ~

It is a world barren of flesh and
blood, a metaphysical refuge un-

-trammeled by the ferocity of

human reason where everything
— mountain, valley, biomorphic

ONE WOULD not guess, looking at a reproduction of one of Ted Kingan's spacious paintings, that

they are seldom more than 15 cm to 25 cm (six to 10 inches) in height.

Having recharged himself at this
private wellspring of pure being,
one can imagine the artist emerg-
ing at last from the sanctuary of his
room, a finely wrought painting
raised triumphantly in the air as if
in confirmation of his improbable

Of course, to the same casual
observer meeting the artist for the -
first time, all this might seem mere
fanciful conjecture.

To all outward appearances Ted
Kingan is the most down-to-earth
man one could ever expect to en-
counter this side of Alpha Centari.

his more exotic alter-ego, and
even then only at several removes.

Born in Lancashire, England,
Kingan graduated from the
Blackpool School of Art in 1952
and the Regional College of Art,
Manchester, where he received his
teacher's diploma one year laier.

With six years under his belt as
an art instructor in Nottingham-
shire, he emigrated to Canada with
his family and immediately took
up residence in North Vancouver,
where he has remained ever since,
teaching art first at Balmoral and
later at Carson Graham secondary
school. .

in 1973, he was called upon to
organize the newly formed Studio
Art Program at Capilano College.

Before retiring in 1987, Kingan’s
teaching activity had expanded to
include art workshops with the
ECCAD “outreach” program, art
instruction to inmates of the B.C.
prison system and input in the de-
velopment of the Knowledge Net-
work. ue

But these accomplishments pale
by comparison with his extracur-
ricular attainments. ;

It is in his sole as magician that ~
we are given a real hint as to his .
significance as an artist. _

A longtime prestidigitator — un- -
pretentious card manipulation _
being his preferred discipline — he
has refined his stance of impertur-
bale nonchalance to perfection.

His is a magic totally devoid of
flamboyance or ostentation.

Its distinguishing characteristic is
the accompaniment of adroll  ~
monologue, the sole purpose of ~
which is to effect no less a goal
