Keen Engineering shows off state-of-the-art race car

TOM JOHNSTON is a man
not afraid of technology.

As president of Keen Techno-
logy, on West First Street in
North Vancouver, Johnston sees
the ever-changing world of tecli-
nology and science as something
to be embraced, not shunned.

As proof, one may look no fur-
ther than Johnston’s passion out-
side of his mechanica! engineering
consulting firm: car racing.

Not just weekend tinkering, ei-
ther. Major-league car racing.

Johnston proudly stood by two
weeks. ago as his new Formula
Atlantic racing car was unveiled in
the lobby of Keen Engineering. -

The new car accelerates from a
standstill to 60 mph (97 kph) in
2.8 seconds, and reaches speeds in
excess of 160 mph (258 kph).

On one wall of Keen's high-
tech office space hang (a
mechanical feat in itself) two rac-
ing cars that technology has left in
the dust. Both cars are less than

Allers runs Frank Allers
Autosport, a Porsche service cen-
tre in North Vancouver. Like
Johnston, Allers, of Coquitlam,
has a passion for racing.

A five-time Western champion
of the Player's Lid./G.M.
Motorsport series, Allers honed
his driving skills at the well-
known Jim Russell Racing School
in England. His roommate while
“at the school was Formula 1 and
Indy driver Danny Sullivan.

“I'm really looking forward to

taking this new car down to
Phoenix,” said Allers at the
unveiling.

Johnston felt the Phoenix
one-mile oval would be a well-
suited debut venue for the No. 6
Reynard 93H Formula Atlantic
