B.C. Tel proposes
increasing toll-free
calling areas for

N. Shore, Bowen

Residential, business line rates
would rise to cover added costs

NORTH SHORE and Bowen Island residents and
businesses will be able to call toll-free to Lower Mainland
areas that they used to pay long distance charges for call-
ing if a proposal by B.C. Tel is approved by the Canadian

- (CRTC).

B.C. Tel plans to file a pro-
posal with the CRTC to allow
customers throughout the Lower
Mainland, from Bowen Island to
Abbotsford and. Mission, to call
each other without incurring
long-distance charges.

Currently, Nerth- Shore
residents and businesses con only
call! Vancouver, Burnaby, Rich-
mond, New Westminster, Port
Moody and Coquitlam without
having to pay long-distance
charges.

Under the B.C. Tel proposal,
North Shore residents will be able
to call Ladner, Newton, Whaliey,
Cloverdale, White Rock, Pitt
Meadows, Langley, Fort Langley,
. Haney, Aldergrove, Mission and
Abbotsford toll-free.

Bowen Island residents, who
currently can only call Vancouver
toll-free, will also be able to call
those Lower Mainland areas

“without paying long-distance

charges.

But Dale Reid, B.C. Tel project
manager, said the new toll-free
systein will not come without ad-
ded costs to residents and
businesses.

To pay for the new service,
B.C. Tel would have to increase
the single-line residential and
businesse rates of the North Shore
and Bowen Island.

Curreriy, the single-line resi-
dential telephone rate fer the
North Shore is $12.05 a month.
Under B.C. Tel’s proposal, that
would increase to $17.95 a month.

The single-line business rate for
the North Shore would increase
from $41.85 per month to $62.85.

On Bowen Island, the single-
line residential rate would increase
to $20.65 per month from $13.60,
while the single-line business rate
would be increased from $48.25
per month to $72.30 a month.

Reid said the proposal is a
response to customer demand for
a simpler, more consistent and
equitable local calling structure.

Last June, the CRTC allowed
for increased competition in the
multi-billion-dollar long distance
telephone market.
