8 - Friday, December 20, 1991 ~ North Shore News Lanskail fights for nat’! unity FORMER WEST Vancouver District mayor Don Lanskail has said it is the responsibility of al] Canadians to do their part to keep Quebec in Confederation. Lanskail, vice-chairman of the Council of Canadian Unity, a group dedicated to keeping Canada together, said one of the organization’s objectives is to become involved with constitu- tional issues and debates. “One program is to initiate the Friends of Canada. It’s a mass citizens’ movement and gives the ordinary Canadian something to do by joining the group,” said Lanskail. He added that Friends of Canada has a branch in every province and includes a_nation- wide membership of 4,000 and a B.C. membership of 500. B.C. executive members of the group include North Vancouver residents Arthur Grant and Billy Garton. “We're simply trying to do our bit to keep Canada together,” said Lanskail. ‘‘The unity of Canada is far too important to be left to only the politicians. The ordinary Canadian has to get in- volved to help keep this country together.’’ : The Council for Canadian Uni- ty was founded in 1964 and is a non-profit, non-partisan national organization. Its main goals, according to Lanskail, are to keep Canada together and to foster a better understanding of Canadian regional, historical and linguistic issues. He said the council played a major role in the 1980 referendum question in Quebec that resulted in a majority of the province's respondents voting against separa- tion. It also worked in establishing and operating the Terry Fox Youth Centre in Ottawa and has provided a forum in which more than 36,000 Canadian students have met and learned about the country and the federal govern- ments. Other North Shore council directors include Merrill Leckie, chairman of the B.C. branch, and secretary Bill McEwen. A recent News poll asked 434 residents across the North Shore if they are in favor of Quebec separating from Canada. Out of those polled, 72% (313) said no, 9% (38) said yes, 14% (60) were undecided and 5% (23) said they did not care one way or the other. He added that if B.C. separates then it should remain independent and not join the United States. “Jt (B.C.) would become one of the richest and most prosperous areas of North America, similar to Switzerland's position with Europe,’’ said Cook.
