The additional charge will pay
for repairs to the Laidlaw trucks,
which Laidlaw said would have
been replaced if the company hid
been asked to continue collecting
city garbage on a long-term basis.

The contract extension covers
the period from June 30 to Sept.
30. The new city trucks are ex-
pected to arrive in mid-August.

Although the delivery date is
being called a delayed delivery by
staff, assistant city engineer Hugh
McKay’ s May 22 report to council
points out that “staff told council
in January that the delivery of the
trucks would probably take three
to five months,

The decision to deprivatize city
garbage collection was made Feb.
18; the expenditure for the new
trucks was approved Feb. 20.

Tenders for the purchase of the
trucks were closed March 20, and
the contract was awarded on April
5. As a result, the expected
delivery date is not unreasonable,
McKay told council.

Alderman Rod Clark and Steila
Jo Dean used the debate as a final
opportunity to voice their disap-
proval of the process used to
make the decision to deprivatize.

Both wanted the garbage collec-
tion contract to go to public
tender.
