Clark accused Bell and Sharp of conflict, of interest in’ both the Feb. 18 deprivatization vote and the vote relating to the garbage truck acquisition, Clark said he considered Bell and Sharp to be in a conflict of interest on the garbage deprivatization issue because both aldermen were endorsed by CUPE (the Canadian Unien of Public Employees) and because Bell has acknowledged receiving a $2,000 campaign contribution from the union in 1990. Six CUPE members will be hired to handle the garbage collec- tion as a result of council’s deci- sioa to deprivatize the service. Corrigan demanded the apology from Clark after the solicitor for the Union of B.C. Municipalities stated that, in his opinion, Bell and Sharp were not in a conflict of interest. Ald. Stetla Io Dean again voted with Clark against the garbage truck acquisition bylaw. And she again spoke out against the fact that the garbage collection con- tract never went to public tender. But Sharp said the issue should be looked at from more than just a financial point of view.
