Age. You know full well the first step outdoors will bring down buckets of rain and hurricane winds immediately followed by blizzards and ice storms. Still, this current weather (as of the writing) is enough to make even the half- hearted gardener’s pulse quicken. So how do you calm your racing heart and satisfy this irresistible urge to get dirty? Why not take some gardening classes? This would allow you the opportunity to get your feet wet without getting too literal about it. Just two weeks ago, I saw an article that listed a number of courses being offered by North Shore Continuing Education. And just the other day I saw a list of very impressive classes being of- fered by UBC Botanical Garden. The following is a copy of the list of subjects scheduled for February and March at the Botanical Garden. Designing Patio Gardens — eg & G Saturday, Feb. 2, 1-4 p.m., Geoff Woods. Come and learn how your patio can become an integral part of your garden, providing a sense of enclosure yet flowing into the rest of the landscape. Along with con- struction materials and plants, special features, such as ornamen- tal ponds and arbors, will be discussed. General Gardening — six Tues- days, Feb. 5-March 12, 7-9 p.m., Wilf Nicholls and Judy Newton. Many different aspects of gardening will be covered from plant requirements, perennials, bulbs, annuals, lawns, vegetables, fruits, shrubs and trees to general care, maintenance, and pest and disease control. Roses for Your Garden Saturday, Feb. 9, 9 a.m.-12 noon, Wilf Nicholls. Learn about roses for the garden: the different types of roses, their care, pruning, plant- ing, fertilizing, disease and insect Geoff Tobiasson ee 2 OVER THE GARDEN GATE control, and soil preparation. Grafting Trees, Shrubs and Co- nifers — Saturday, Feb. 9, 9 a.m.-12 noon, Bruce Macdonald. This hands-on workshop covers grafting skills. Everyone will graft some plants to take home. Hedges and Ground Covers — Saturday, Feb. 23, 1-4 p.m., Peter Wharton. Peter will show you how to choose, plant and care for hedges and ground covers. You will be able to take home cuttings of selected plants. Sunrooms or solariums are a wonderful addition to the house but how do ycu heat and cool them? What type of plants will grow well and how do you look after them? All aspects of con- struction, care and design will be discussed. Vegetable Gardening — Satur- day, March 16, 9 a.ni.-12 noon and Thursday, July 25, 7-9 p.m., Judy Newton. This is a two-part class. The March session will deal with all aspects of vegetable gardening, including site choice, soil prepara- tion and planting techniques. The second session will! take place in the Botanical Garden where we'll see the different vegetables. Smail Space Gardening — three Tuesdays, March. 19-Aprif 2, 7-9 p-m., David Tarrant and Judy Newton A class for gardeners with only a baicony, deck or townhouse- sized Iot to grow a garden. The sessions cover efficient use of small sites, suitable plants, prob- lems and the use of containers. How to Espalier Fruit Trees — Saturday, March 9, $ a.m.-12 noon, Murray Kereluk. The basics of how to espalier fruit trees in the home garden. Murray will cover the cultural re- quirements and everyone will take home a one-year-old tree to espalier in their own garden. Getting Down to Earth — Saturday, March 9, 9 a.m.-12 noon, Wilf Nicholls. You will never call it dirt again; not after you learn what soil is and how it works.
