Architecture on display A WEST VANCOUVER architec- tural firm, Blue Sky Design, is displaying examples of its work at the Simon Fraser University Har- bour Centre in Vancouver. Blue Sky Design has gained in- ternational attention for excellence in design and fer its documenta- tion of hand-crafted architecture. The company is known for creating unique houses on the Gulf Istands and Whistler. “Our speciaity is to directly tespond to what the client wishes and each particular site. For in- stance, a house on Whistler would be quite different than a house on Hornby island, and a house in Victoria would be quite different to both those two,” said president Bo Helliwell. Sponsored by Alcan, the same show was invited to an_interna- tional architectural show in Berlin, Germany, in 1984 and _ travelled throughout western and eastern Europe. Running until Oct. 27, the ex- hibit includes original drawings, photographs, prints and models, as well as a full scale installation. The show, presented by the Vancouver League for Studies in Architecture and the Environment, includes samples of Blue Sky Design’s more recent work. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. For information phone 291-5083. Pixies enly want to entertain From page 30 Deal said. The Pixies vision quickly caught the attention of European fans. Doolittle made the top 10 in Bri- tain and now its being picked up by fans in North America. Deal claims the band’s musical influences are “‘regular’’ and that tha band’s mandate is simply to entertain — “There aren’t any weird tangents any of us are on. Nobody’s like totally into Nigerian music.”’ Nevertheless, pick up a copy of Come On Pilgrim or Dooiittle and a graphic weirdness grabs ‘you by the eyeballs. in the cover art of photographer Simon Larbalestier, the band has found the perfect vi- sual foil to Kitridge’s fitful out- bursts. For example, the simian image of a hairy-backed man, gracing the cover of Come On Pilgrim, sets the tone for the contents within. Said Deal: “It’s a real guy too. His back is actually that hairy. The hair is wetted down — it’s weird.” Three albums into the alter- native music game finds the Bostonians among the few truly subversive outfits playing a field jammed with poseurs and ciones. That distinction alone ensures a modicum of success in the frac- tured music biz these days. How about it Kim, are Pixies The Next Big Thing? ‘Beats me. | would like it, ya. People tend to think that it's bad for you to say that. But 1 don’t think it’s bad at all. Ya, | hope we're the next big thing. In a way, it’s just what writers write about. What was the last big thing?’ Humpty’s falls by the wayside From page 29 grand opening celebrations and a visit from a large inflatable egg-like mascot. Perhaps it was the location or maybe it was just the egg puns that linered its menu — | can’t tell you about the restaurant's food because it wasn't there long enough for me to sample — whatever the reason, Humpty’s is no longer at its Esplanade location. As they say in the egg trade: Over easy. HAIRSPRAYS Flourescent Unbelievable, bui true! NINJA TURTLE COS’ UMES Vhile quantities last!
