OPEN LETTER TO , CHILDBEARING COUPLES I was disappointed to read in the North Share News that Lions Gate Hospital has rejected the proposed midwifery pilot — project. again we hear of some physicians putting their wishes ahead of the needs and desires of their clients. Dr. McTaggart i is quoted as say- ing ‘that some doctors are concern- ed that midwifery would cut into the “nicest part of the GPs' prac- tices" and implied that the doctors would not have contact with their clients. In a pilot: project the dac- tor is very. involved ‘and infact. must be present “at the ‘delivery.to conform to the British Columbia Medic I Act. -If./doctors are “concerned that they /will lose patients to a future midwifery. service, perhaps . they should ask ‘why women. would +, choose midwifery over the present | system.’ The fact that many women / are making choices is reflected in the number of /North Shore resi- dents who go to Grace Hospital.’ The apprehension of diluting the intern .program. by. “midwifery program does not seem to be a problem in countries: such as New ‘Zealand or Australia, “where midwifery is an autonomous ~ profession.
