Pitch in, clean up AN OVERWHELMING response by service chibs, schools. and day cares, the Scout and Guide move- ments, 4-H clubs and other com- munity groups bas. boosted pat- ticipation in the 1988 Pitch-In Cainpaign by almost S50 per cent over 1987, . The campaign takes place during the week of May 2 to & and wil! invaive close to 200), O00 volun- : teers. “Our. supply of free garbage bags donated by Canada Safeway Limited was depleted in early April and unfortunately we had to disappoint some groups,”’ said Stu Reeder who is both chairman of the board of directors of Outdoors Unlittered and president of the B.C. Wildlife Federation, the two organizations which co-sponsor Pitch-In in British Columbia. Not only has the number of par- ticipating groups exceeded all ex- pectations but the scope of pro- . jects has also broadencd in 1988. “A number of organizations have planned extensive programs in- volving many other groups’ said North Vancouver Ald. Stella Jo Dean. chairman of the 1988 Pit- ch-In Advisory Comniittec. Canyon Ecology Centre in North Vancouver, for example, is plann- ing a comprehensive clean-up of Lynn Canyon Park involving Scouts, Guides, Big Brothers and Sisters, the Friends of the Ecology Centre, the Lions Club, hiking clubs and churches." Reeder believes that response from conimunities “has risen drastically’ this year as’. a direct result of the increased support Pit- ch-In has received from local gov- ermment. “I's clear that British Colum- bians care about the environment in which they live and that they recognize it’s time to actively become involved in looking after it,’ adds Dean, stating there is also the direct economic benefit of having a beautiful community that attracts tourists, Plans for the 1989 campaign are already being made by the cam- paign's organizers. Allard van Veen, president of Outdoors Unlit- tered, points out that in. order. for the campaign to continue in the future, it will need the support of the government of British Colum- bia, corporate sponsors and local government. ' In 1988, we had great difficulty obtaining a relatively small amount of funding from the province. Hopefully, in 1989, as a result of the support of the approximately 200,000 volunteers who will donate millions of dollars of free labour during .Pitch-In, support will be more readily forthcoming,’’ he said. Van Veen adds that campaign organizers not only have to per- suade the Ministry of Environment to continue its support but they will also have to convince more communities to provide funds. “After all, it’s groups in local communities who receive the ma- terials..and it’s the community which receives the direct benefit,’’ he said. .
