John Brettoner, owner of J & J
Texaco Service on Marine in West
Vancouver, developed a prototype
replica of the car three years ago.
Today he says he. is moving. ap-
proximately 25 kits and two or
three complete cars a year.

“The original car won just
about everything in the early ’60s
as the world’s fastest production
car,’’ said Brettoner. He estimates
only 100 of the approximately 320
427s produced are still on the road.

The original version of the 427.
was powered by a 480-horsepower ~

stock 427 Nascar race-bred engine.

The car was a joint product of -

Ford Motors and A.C. Cars of

England and was designed by
Carol Shelby.

“A young guy could walk into a
dealership, put $500 down on
$7,000 and drive away with a rac-
ing car,”’ said Brettoner.

Today the remaining originals
command in the neighborhood of
$200,000 but a replica kit con-
sisting of a fibreglass body and
custom-made chassis (both made
by Brettoner’s company) can be
had for $6,995. The ready-to-go
version powered by a 351 V-8 selis
for $39,800.

Dun & Bradstreet Canada Ltd.

numbered 1,708 versus 1,784 last
year,

Business failures increased in the
province for the same period. This
year 140 failed in April while 115
failed April *86.
