ail to lose measy rider Dear Editor: The discontinuing of the Red Cap service by Via Rail helped us make up our minds how we are going to Toronto to visit our daughter. We planned on stopping off in Regina and Winnipeg to visit friends but will now fly right through as there will be tou much humping luggage going by train. I have angina and cannot walk very far never mind carry luggage. When we fly, our bags are taken into the airport by the cabby, loaded in the plane and I am pushed to the plane in a wheelchair as it is quite a long walk in some airports. The same applies at our desti- They both spend millions a year fighting each other in advertising and publicity which could be put into ser- vice, equipment and maintenance. We haven't the population to sustain two railways. It is like the expense of maintaining two languages or two measures systems. What the Red Caps is costing them is peanuts com- pared to what duplication is costing. | suggest the two rail lines amalgamate. This would save the taxpayer a bundle in subsidies. This is no way to encourage the public to go by train. They have just lost $1,200 from our trip alone. 7 - Friday, January 30, 1987 - North Shore News Barrett Has Earned Respect & Affection Dear Editor: Dave Barre(« may not have been the very best talk show host in the world although a lot of people enjovet him. dul we can trust Doug Collins to exalt in what he may boge to perce? +e as his downfall. Why do we need two transcontinental rail lines? End world hunger Dear Editor: I'm writing to tell you that you never write about all the hungry people in this world. Almost half of the world is hungry, 24 people die each minute, and 35,000 people: die each day. If everybody pitched in and gave money we could stop hunger and end it by the year 2000. Please write an article in your newspaper. There are two people going around the schools and teaching the students about those people. Just last week they came to my school (St. Edmund’s). Anita Parti North Vancouver J.H. Cooley, West Vancouver Reader suggests banning ‘cannibals’ Dear Editor: Some time back Vancouver citizens were upset to find that one group of immigrant ‘‘refugees’’ had brought with them their taste for roast dog. Now a news report states that Montreal citizens are concerned about the large number of cats which are disappearing from their streets and we can assume that another ‘‘refugee’’ group has found a cheap source of dietary protein. . The prime minister, Mr. Mulroney, is on tour of Africa. As you know, certain African tribes use their neighbors as a meat source. The result is they are persecuted by these same neighbors, which qualifies them for ‘‘refugee’’ status under our Canadian Immigration Dept. rules, Would it be discriminatory, or against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, to suggest that the prime minister refrain from extending an open invitation to these cannibal tribes lest we begin to lose our citizens, as well as our pets? May I suggest that North Shore residents would be much better served if the narrow, destructive and maligning viewpoints of your columnists Bob Hunter and par- ticularly Doug Collins were either upgraded to provide some value to the community, or replaced by one (or more) of the more enlightened and constructive syndicated col- umnists. As an alternative, there are sure- ly many readers of the North Shore News who could contribute constructive essays on a wide range of topics if Hunter and Collins would only graciously abandon their wasted time and space.
