Fabien LaPierre was originally charged in connection with inci- dents Dee. 20 and 22. THE BIG lie 1 try to perpetrate around our house is that ‘worthy’ of sendiag to Mr. there is absolutely no danger of the Earth being destroyed for at least a couple of billion years. That is, there are no such things as nuclear weapons. I have mentioned before, | have tried very hard to keep the news about The Bomb away from my cight-year-old kid. The secret got blown, as it were, over the Christmas holidays. Many of you must be aware of the Art Nuko paintings done by local artist Carl Chaplin, who depicts nuclear bombs exploding over the great cities and landmarks of the world, from the White House and the Taj Mahal to Expo, from Bangkok to San Francisco. Chaplin is a dedicated peace freak. He believes, as a responsible artist, that he has to do something to help change mass awareness about the still-all-too-real_ danger of a nuclear Armageddon. His means is to relentlessly show The Bomb going off in familiar settings. To shove our faces in it, so t9 speak. To yank our heads out of the sand. Here! Look, damn you! If you don’t get off your asses, this is what will happen! It is painful, powerful stuff. And of course it does exactly what I have been trying so hard to pro- tect my kid from. It awakens the sense of doom. As luck would have it, we at- tended a Christmas party along with Carl Chaplin this season. Had the kids with us. I had quite a discussion with Chaplin about how someone had given us a handful of postcards reproducing his Art Nuko material. And how 1 had hidden them away, lest my youngster see them. Lo owould rather he saw por nography, definitely, even though he is too young for that too, than look at these atomic bombs going off. Yet we ended up visiting Chaplin at his studio in Kitsilano after the party, and my boy, Willy, natural- ly came along. Foo late, | realized that many of Chaplin's massive canvasses were on the walls, in- cluding several of the Art Nuko series. There was The Bomb. Naked and huge and monstrous. What do you do at that stage? Put your hands over the boy’s eyes? Too late. Willy surprised me by saying: “Gee, I’ve seen that before, Dad. And that. And that.’’ I guess, somehow, he'd seen those bloody Art Nuko postcards. My wife bought me a print of one of Chaplin’s other pairings for Christmas and we went heme. A week later, Willy came up to me to show me the crayon draw- ings he had just done showiug ite world being blown up. There was a very accurate globe with a third of it vanishing into a scribbled explo- sion. And, on another sheet, just a huge scribble, with the entire earth gone. It was titled: The End of the Earth. Desperately, I told him: “That’s only, bad science fiction cartoon stuff, you knew!’ He calmly assured me he understood that. But he wondered, anyway, if these pictures were CHOICE OF 5 COLOURS 1986 EXCEL GLS ’ TOP OF THE LINE MODEL DEALER PRICE: $9745 $7998 NO EXTRA CHARGES EXCEPT SALES TAX NO HAGGLING NO OTHER SPECIALS, DISCOUNTS OR REBATES TATLOW PRICE Cail Classifieds 986- 6222 Chaplin, the artist. And back came oa letter from) Carl Chaplin, explaining why he paints what he paints: “Many people accuse me of be- ing depressed because J have painted pictures of atomic bombs, But far from worrying about ‘the end of the world,’ | quite enjoy the time Lam spending on this planet. When Twas a kid T spent a lot of time outside exploring and playing. “Now that I’m an adult 1 still enjoy being in nature but | also spend time secking to help correct problems in the environment and society. This gives me a sense of accomplishment that makes me feel goad. In fact | am convinced that, for those who work for it, the Earth will be a good provider.’’ Willy was totally honored to receive such a letter from a great artist. He didn’t seem fazed that, just incidentally, into his mind had come the dawning of the idea of holocaust. When [ insisted one last time that it was all just make-believe, he looked back at me in a different way. He knew [| was the one mak- ing believe.
