A FEW years ago | decided to pack a little adventure into my life and what better way day? 1 got out an atlas and came up with this: First, a flight to Rio de Janeiro, just because | love the place. From there 1 flew to Sao Paulo and took a bus to San Jose dos Campos to visit some ald friends. We caught a boat in B.A. that took us back to Rio and then across the Atlantic to Genoa with stops in Lisbon and Naples. In Genoa we caught a train and meandered our way through Europe, spending time in Switzerland and Holland. Five weeks from our departure we caught a CPAir flight home from Amsterdam. It took me about an hour to plot the route and less than a day to get the bookings. I know it sounds like a big undertaking but that sort of travel is relatively simple — if there’s room on the flights. Now Pll tell you about a really difficult travel problem. It’s oc- cupied several days, off and on, including hours on the phone. to do it than an unusual holi- Did you kiow that it is virtually impossible to find a reasonable way from Klamath Falls, Oregon to Reno, Nevada. For that matter, does anyone really care? Well, in this case | care. (t's my friend and me who will be stranded travel wise Barbara McCreadie in Klamath Falls and it seems only sensible that if I could get myseif around three continents reliably and conveniently | ought to be able to negotiate a simple interstate transfer. Naturally, there should be regu- lar buses. After all, Klamath Falls is directly on the route to Reno for everyone coming from B.C., Western Washington and a lot of Oregon. What a laugh! There is one bus. It leaves Klamath Falls in the mid- die of the night (12:05 a.m.) and struggles into Reno at 6:10 in the morning. Doesn't that sound marvellous? I set that plan on the back burner to be retrieved in case of emergency. Eaton's Travel= Our reputation goes with you... It’s a case of, “You can't get there from here.” Mind you, if you really love trains you'd enjoy this: Depart K.F. at 10:30 p.m, but not for Reno. How about Sacramento? There you lave a chance to uproot all your baggage and change trains. When you finally chug into Reno it’s #bout 5:30 p.m. the next day. Considering that the trip takes whout four to six hours by road that’s a bit much, So why nat tly? Because all the planes take you back to Sacramen- to, and although I’m sure Sacramento is home to a lot of fine people, | don’t want to go there. | simply want to go directly to Reno. Well, then, if the highway goes directly to Reno, why not rent a car and drive? I'll tell you why not. Of all the major car rental “Travel between 01 Oct firms [| could find, only two even knew where Klamath Falls could be found. 1 nearly choked when | found out what renting a car would cost, in terms of American money. Hertz offered me the use of one of their vehicles for $49 a day with 100 free miles. After that it) was eda ge FP 1S¢ a mile and an $85 charge to drop-off the car in Reno. Avis wanted $40 for the car, no free mileage (30¢ a mile) and $80 to dump the car. Anyone care to throw away about three hundred bucks?
