INTERIOR design consisting of
ruffles and romance may appeal to
the lady of the house, but what
about the man of the house?

How do they go about creating an
environment with a more
masculine attitude?

The first step, according to John
Leigh Spath, director of design for
a national wall covering firm is to
decide the kind of ambience you
want to project.

“Masculine rooms have charac-
teristically been based around
sports. or nautical memorabilia.
But, more sophisticated looks can
be achieved simply and effectively
with wall coverings,’’ notes Spath.

UNDERSTATED LOOKS

For example, the tailored design
of a library or study definitely
reflects a man’s personal space. A
large plaid wall covering, wrapped
around the room, combined with a
companion fabric or coordinating
solid and leather furniture, will
create the understated look of an
exclusive men’s club.

A more dynamic interior can be
created by upgrading the safari
look of natural earthtones and tex-
tural animal skins. Says Spath,
“Alligator hide wall covering,
creates an immediate visual impact
which brings to mind wild game
hunters.

However, its simplicity allows a
room to make a_ sophisticated,
rather than an overwhelmingly ag-
gressive, design statement.’

Spath also points out that a
simple and elegant interior —

which also has a masculine tone —
can be created with trompe l'oeil
wall coverings which simulate fine-
ly carved woodworking, molding
or paneling.

a space, Spath notes that adding
textural wall covering as a
background will unify the room
and add that touch of ‘*rugged in-
dividualism.”
