Variety starts at the culinary
ground floor with a choice of three
pizza doughs: Traditional Italian,
San. Francisco Sour and Calzone,
which uses traditional Italian
dough, but is baked with one half
doubled over chosen toppings to
form the pizza equivalent of a
Cornish Pastie.

Sauce, too, is shaken from ubi-
quitous tomato and presented in
five variations from Tomato Clam
to Salsa to San Francisco Herb.

In addition to five cheeses,
SFPD offers 37 different toppings.
These run in three price ranges and

three degrees of gastronomic com- ~

plexity.

For the conservative soul who
might enjoy the occasiona wander
on: the wild side, regular toppings,
from ham to black olives, are pric-
ed from $.50 for.a $6 small. pizza
to $1 for a $10 SFPD large. ;

In the semi-wild section, for the
wearer of one earring, two-tone
shoes, and perhaps a touch of
henna, small toppings go from
$.70 to $1.40 and range from
capers to water chestnuts.

For the neighborhood raver with
spiked hair and clothes by Cindy
Lauper, Deluxe Toppings, $.95 to

: $1.95, range from.smoked salmon

to San Francisco meat balls.
Because. all pizzas are custom

made from dough through to top-.
ping, ordering at SFPD is not for

opportunity for argument and ex-

obstinately opposing tastebuds.
For the diner with, yearnings
beyond ihe strictly circular, SFPD

provides a half dozen assorted
pastas, all around $7, and four
meat dishes in the $9 range.

Menu critique was conducted
from a window-side booth in the
85-seat SFPD Lower Lonsdale
precinct.

From the ‘Lite Sentence’’ ap-
petizer section, Smoked Salmon
Mushroom Caps ($3.95) stuffed
with cream cheese, capers, and
chives, an ambitious concoction,
proved somewhat scorched, but

relatively edible.
Pizza, however, was well above

average. Construction planning of -

our selection took a heated 15
minutes, but eventually my wife -
and I arrived at a San Francisco
sour dough base with Italian
Classic sauce, topped with
Camembert cheese, Hot Capicollo
meat, fresh avocado, sour cream
and artichoke hearts.
