rants, the 110-seat West
Vancouver Vina caters as
much to family luaus as it
does to more intimate
groupings.

In that spirit, | headed a
Table Hopping family
outing .to Vina Saturday
evening after carefully in-
structing brothers and
sisters-in-law in the complex
art of restaurant reviewing
and outfitting each with
scorecard and copies of
assorted Alex MacGillivary
critiques.

MUSICAL BACKDROP

. From Vina’s better-than-
average wine list, we roused
palates with a bottle of
Soave Bolla ($12.50) and a
back-up 1979 vintage
Cabernet Sauvignon from
Australia’s) Wyndham
Estates ($14.95). The sub-
dued strains of Herb Good-
murphy’s piano. supplied a
gentle musical backdrop to
the various test garglings.

-. Vietnamese Rol! Dips
($5.85), Cha Gio for the
worldly, were first up. The
crisp deep-fried rolls, filled
with various meats and

vegetables, are an excellent,

appetizer. — from the eight
scorecards held up, they
scored a good 7.5 average. |
We passed on soups,
salads, and appetizers
(nothing over $5) despite
such intriguing selections as
Frogs Legs Au Beurre
- ($5.95) and Hot and Sour

Prawn Soup ($2.95);

ing’s special, Tom Nuong
($10.95), prawns in sour
cream sauce, and a Drunken
Lobster ($14.95) were also
sampled.

DRUNKEN DISH

1 rated the duck at seven,
a massive portion, nicely
cooked in sauce neither
overwhelming nor
unintelligible, accompanied
with mounds of vermicelli,
vegetables, and pond of
anisette sauce for dipping.

Scorecards on the other
entrees unfortunately were
either soaked in wine or
covered in spatters of food.
Word-of-mouth approval,
however, was unanimous.

A round of deep-fried
bananas for dessert was
marred somewhat by the
Vina’s ice-cream shortage.
We were forced to suffer
