NN BLANCHARD Designer extraordinaire Christine Morton has begun designing fashions for flower girl gowns featuring ihe same intricate lace and sumptuous silk that’s been her trademark in bridal fash- ions and lingerie for over a decade. “We're all having babies and want our kids to look giamorous,"’ says the West Vancouver designer, who looked to designs for the young after the birth of her first child, Selena, four months ago. “It gives you more in- spiration when you have a child,”’ she said. There's a definite market and trend for children’s designs,. Morton says, par- ticularly for designer fash- ions and one-of-a-kind orig- inals, “‘People are spending the SHEP NTH ciet. , in he esigns for women. 165 open 7 west ¥ and reading: ‘fashions and likes to use.lace to highlight her’ designs ler new line of children’s clothing im- itates the fine’ wo nship ‘and attention ‘to detail apparent Designer Save “111 West ist, N. The little girls’ dresses are pint-size versions of the orig- inal $500 and up creations in soft, spring shades of silk taffeta and antique, ecru lace detail. ‘It’s quite fun to do,”’ she says. Morton specializes in lingerie, wedding dresses and accessories. The racks in her bright, spacious studio are laden with gowns of flowing silk, prettily-laced nighties and teddies, hats cascading ~ with yards of lace, and ac- cesssories {from mesh-lace gloves to embroidered bags. Morton started designing lingerie before branching out to create blouses and wed- ding dresses. Morton’s creations feature delicate lace and she often mixes types, textures and colors. Morton uses antique hand-made lace, or machine-made lace from the early 1920s. With the machine-made lace you can’t tell the dif- ference,’’ Morton explains, but adds today’s lace is not: in the same league. The Morton creations are also keepsakes because of their unique quality. “Being antique lace, you can pass it down and cherish it as a piece.” Each year, or season, Morton notes the changes in fashion and sometimes ap- plies them to her designs, although the Morton trademark is timeless Vic- torian sophistication. Morton says the flower girl dresses are a natural. “What's nicer than a little girl in a pretty lace gown?
