English NOT a ‘second language’

English is ‘ta second
language’ not ‘the’ first
language or even ‘the’ se-
cond Janguage behind French
but a Jangauge second to any
other Janguage you want to
name.

In case our bureaucrats
have missed it English is the
modern communicator's
linguafranca. It is the
language most commonly us-
ed by the world's leading
scientists, industrialists,
sociologists. ft is one of
Canada’s two official
languages, English and
French, and the one in which
all our provincial laws are
phrased.

If 1 had my way English
would be ‘the first language
of B.C." Immigrant children
would go to classes to learn
our common language. No

Dear Editor:

| happen to enjoy reading
books on investigative jour-
nalism. 1 have in the past
read all the currently banned
books by the Governemnt.
Why does the Government
have to concentrate on this
one area of freedom of the
press and even squash opi-
nion in the process. The
Government should come out
with a clear law against the
freedom of opinion for all
Canadians. Then the gauntlet
style bashing Zundel gets will
be, in all fairness, served up
to all charged with having an
Opinion.
