The feat can only be achieved with the aid of a sophisticated computer that presents Collins with an accurate rendition of what he sees in his mind's eye to combine elements into a working model. Collins, 42, is spear- heading the first research project in Canada ever to use computers in building design. It has introduced technological advances that have revolutionized the manner of His Concordia University laboratory walls are papered in colorful drawings of three- ' dimensional office towers, evidence the computer has become 4 versatile and creative means for ar- chitects, engineers or planners to communicate concepts. Computer programming has so far been developed for the design of the basic truss work of a structure, its elevation and energy requirements. “The computer is not going to make a better design. We're going to have a tool that will give designers the information for decision- making,” says Collins, a professor at the university's advanced Centre for Building Studies. The challenge facing Collins is to develop an information data base for use in designing a variety of structures. “Each ap- plication feeds into the computer's memory, a data base that can be used by other applications. So the designer is using his time only in the design process. “The data base now is held in the head of an architect or the designer,” Collin says. But a computer information base automatically transfers any change to a completed design into all relevant files, climinating cxpensive changes during’ con- struction. The computer has _ fast become an cssential tool for engincers and Collins has ensured that ecngincers arc well-equipped to meet future demands by requiring all undergraduates enroll in a computer design course “If the designer turns out bad buildings using a computer, please don't blame it on the computer We forget that there was a programmer, so if there's a problem, it’s human error ” Using computer lingo, Collins feeds the machine (} variables including = the aumber of floors and stylic and dimension of windows Within seconds, the “per fect” building is drawn on the video screen, accurate to onc 10 thousandthe! an inch 1981, said Joan Wallace, . a 3 x _— a ; 2 : Preven bie uality Wood Stain ng, na. peeling and cracking. The National Council of Welfare has estimated that the number of poor families in Canada would increase by 51 per cent if all working wives left the work force. Some 89 per cent of female part-time workers are employed in the service industries, primarily in community, business and personal services and in trade, Wallace said. About 70 per cent of the female part-time workers are involved in clerical, sales and service fields where the pay is low, the commissioner said. The commission, struck in February to investigate aspects of part-time work, was to hold public hearings across Canada commencing Sept. 2 in Ottawa and report to the federal government in early 1983.
