Fees are getting ‘out of reach’: Crist

mendations for the location
and the construction in the
District of North Vancouver
of a multi-use playing field
complex, consisting, among
other things, of a minimum
of four soccer fields to fill a
desperate need for our
young people,. and that the
cost of such a complex be
acccomodated within the
1982 budget as well.”

Alderman Jim Ball said he
didn’t object to the intent of
the motion, but “there’s a
limit to what the taxpayer
can afford.”

The District has spent a lot
of money on recreation in
the past, he said, adding that
he couldn't see where
council could get the money
for any further expansion.

Many taxpayers don't use
recreational facilities, and
these people are subsidizing
the others, Ball said.

are set by the commission
and not by District or City
council.

The fees are in line with
those in the rest of the Lower
Mainland, he said, but every
year the hockey and swim
clubs complain anyway.

Bell said the proposed new

fees are just that —
proposed— and may not be
the fees the commission

actually séts.

The proposed fees, which
caused a bit of a stir in the
November municipal
elections, would see, for
example, the pnme time
rental fee go from $24.48 an
hour to $29.90 an hour at the
Karen Magnussen Arena.

Crist warned that these
fees were putting recreation
out of the reach of the or-
dinary person. “Fewer and
fewer people can afford it,”
he warned.
