A resolution Tuesday by some_ 1,000 gathered in Halifax for the association’s annual meeting took aim at the electronic media because of what they called television’s “lifestyle image” to which young people are particularly vulnerable. “There is urgency in the electronic media,” said Dr. R.W. Ghent, chairman of the CMA's council on health care. “It is making new drinkers in a younger age group.” The CMA’s report on alcoholism stated people were drinking more and at an earlier age, possibly because the legal drinking age had been lowered from 21 to 19 or 18 in some provinces. “There is some evidence that by 18 some people may be seasoned drinkers,” the report said. A related resolution called for a federal inquiry into alcohol consumption—“one of our major health hazards, which has become an ac- ceptable social norm.” Ghent said. “We feel strongly that the recommendations are the first tentative steps to establish a set of guidelines and rules that medically are sound and will offer guidance to young people as they grow into the drinking age,” Ghent said. Dr. R.F. Clark, executive secretary of the Alberta Medical Association, said, “We need to make this a national concern, and the only way to do it is through a national commission.” The CMA also decided to delay a review of the current abortion situation until next year.
