When he began operations in 1903 he envisioned a “universal car” and, in 1908, he built it. By year’s end he had made two hundred and_= seven units. In 1927, when he reluctantly ceased produc- tion, sales totalled an in- credible fifteen million. It was Ford’s ambition to make his car available to the general public, not the privileged few. He took care to surround himself with men who shared his views: his Sales Manager, James Couzens, and Walter E. Flanders, his Production Ad- visor. Together they stressed change and innovation from the earliest days. The Fords that preceded the ‘T’ were starkly simple machines, 4-cylinder models designated ‘N’, ‘R’ and ‘S’. All had nght-hand drive. The first Model‘T’ was still transportation at its basic. It lacked a speedometer and temperature gauge and had no starter or bumpers. It had _ left-hand steering, an oddity at the time, as well as a low-tension magneto built into the flywheel, thermosyphon water cooling, and enclosed shaft, and radius rods. Its four cylinder engine was cast en bloc; that is, in one unit. Its top speed was about 45 mph and gas con- sumption ranged from 25-30 mpg. The ‘T’ originally listed at $850. In the first full pro- duction year, 1909, the ‘T began to catch on with the public. Almost 14,000 units were bought, including a slick new roadster. This model featured a_ single bucket seat at the back, ex- posed to wind, rain and snow. The uncomfortable perch became known as ‘the mother-in-law seat’ a name which time has not displac- ed. That same year, Ford add- ed a gas generator mounted on the running board, which supplied gas to the headlights by a mixture of water dripping onto lumps of carbide. By this time Ford realized that he would have to drastically increase his pro duction capacity to keep pace with growing demand. He moved to his Highland Park plant in 1910 and began to streamline and simplify his techniques with assembly lines that served a central area. In 1913 he ex- perimented with a moving assembly line. and was amazed to find his final assembly time was cut in half This, of course, forced his employees into one locahon and specialized task, which fostered some discontent To counteract this” effect.
