community roundup iis Early North Vancouver pioneer dies at age 91 John Rodger Burnes, ’a well-known North Shore personality for most of the present century and a noted North Vancouver historian, died Fnday, November 14, at the age of 91. Born in Hamilton, Ont., in 1889, Mr. Burnes came to Vancouver al the age of two and moved with his family seven years later to their home at 8th and Lonsdale in North Vancouver. Educated at the Moody- ville School, he became a land surveyor for the Greater Vancouver Water board, surveying over the years many North and West Vancouver roads and properties. An avid enthusiast for North Van's early history, he was the author of two books on the area — North Vancouver 1891 - 1907 and Echoes of the Fernes, now found in ali North Van school libraries. He also donated many pictures and historical data to the North Shore Archives and Museum, as well as writing numerous newspaper ar- ticles.
