GAME OF THE WEEK by A.P. McCredie In a game marked by defensive stands, the Carson Graham Eagies shut out rival Handsworth Royals 9-0, to take a one-game lead in Buchanan Bow! outcomes, 4-3. The annual fall classic is a trib- ute match to former Carson Graham ° vice-principal Jim Buchanan, who passed away in 1986. All money collected at the gate went to the Buchanan Bowl Scholarship Fund. A scholarship will be awarded to one player from each school in the spring of 1994, Going into the game the Eagles were ranked the No. | single A team in the province, though they weren’t fielding their best with running back Shayne Gait on the injured list. Gait’s replacement, Dan Pierce, played a great game, eventually being named the Eagles’ most valuable player. Strachan Hartley earned the nod for the Royals. Neither team couid get their offences going consistenly, though big plays were produced by both teams. On the opening kickoff, the Eagles’ Armen Pogosian ran a Matt Anderson kick back to the Royals’ 2i-yard line, and was eventually pulled down by Anderson. , The high-powered Eagles of-. fence couldn’t get the ball in scoring range, and turned the ball over on possessions on a failed fourth-down attempt. Matt Sanderson took the first - snap of the game for the Royals on their own 32-yard line, but like "the Eagles’ offence, the Royals couldn’t get a first down. The Eagles managed a couple of first downs on their next series before having to punt to Hands- worth. A beautiful kick by Eagles punter Corey Cameron put the Royals on their own one-yard line. , But Handsworth running-back , Ban Elliot gave the Royals some breathing: room with an f1-yard tumble through the Carson -.Graham defensive line. Another first. down followed, but the Royals could only move the ball to their own 35 before kicking it away. , Taking over at their 42-yard line, the Eagles, led by quarter- back Josh McKay and some strong running by Gait’s stand-in, _ Pierce, marched down the field to Handsworth’s 21-yard line. ' A fourth-and-inches pitch io Pierce kept the drive alive. Hitting tight-end Mike Kulik over the middle, McKay had his team on the one yard line. Handsworth player John Lindsay blocked the point after, giving the Eagles a 6-0 lead halfway through the second quarter. The ensuing kickoff put the Royals on their own 18, but a big defensive stand by the Eagles’ front line quickly had Sanderson standing on his own six-yard line to kick to the Eagles. Carson Graham linebacker Mare Andrew burst through the line and sacked Sanderson, to put the Eagtes in scoring position once again. . . On. third and goal, Eagles quarterback Arimo Evans, in for McKay, was picked off by Royals linebacker Andrew Newton, saving Handsworth from going down two touchdowns in the first half. The Handsworth offence kept having their troubles, and with a minute left in the half the Eagles were threatening once again. On fourth and a yard to go on the Handsworth 23-yard line, the Royals’ defence once again came up big. Elliot came up from his linebacking position and wrapped up Pierce to turn the ball over to Handsworth. Seconds later halftime was called.
