Durman also weighed in on
the plan, both citing their
own concerns about the pro-
posal and why it would neg-
atively affeer the North
Shore.

Coun, Ferguson said she
was not entirely unsupport-
ive of the strategic plan's
goals, but was concerned
that North Shore communi-
ties were getting the short
end of the stick when it came
to incentives.

“It may be of benefit to
some of the constituencies i
the (Greater Vancouver
Regional District) but ... the
North Shore has been sume-
whar shortchanged in terms
of any ‘carrots’ to support
the goals cf the plan.”

Coun. Durman criticized
the proposed fare rate hike
and said that if TransLink
hikes fares on a zone-by-
zone basis, then a return
daily trip on the SeaBus — a
two-zone fare during peak
hours — will cast daily com-
muters an extra dollar per
day.

“TransLink has totally
forgotten the cust-eftective-
ness of the SeaBus,~ he said.
“It is amazing, that we have a
ferry link to downtown (that
‘will) penalize people for
using it.”

Pay, workload key issues in dispute

“The public should realize the long-terns

On Wednesday, two Crown lawyers who usuaily
dont work in North Vancouver handled cases.

Crown lawvers are not unionized and work
under the Ministry of Atorney General. ‘They
have been widhout a contract for two years.

Last March, Crown lawyers threatened job
action. They agreed to put off job action when
the provincial government: appointed former
ombudsman Stephen Owner to conduct a
report and make recommendations in a bid to

setup a process for Crown raises and to address
workload issares,

According to othe Crown Counsel
Assocation, the majority of courtream prosecu-
tors with more than 10 vears experience make
376,000 3 year, Many of them have made that
sage sine, 1992 or earlier.

According to the Crown Counsel
Association, Crown lawyers have received about
a ¥% wage imerease in the last cight vears. An
associadion spokesman says with the current svs-
tem, there is no hope of getting a raise. Entry
level Crown lawvers with seven years of univer:
sity and one year articling (lawyer apprentice-
ship) make $39,000 a year.

In contrast, the Crown association says top
criminal defence lawyers can make more than
$400,000 a year. A provincial court judge makes
about $140,000 a year. A B.C. Supreme Court
judge makes about $175,000.

The results of the Crown lawyers’ vore and
specifics about possible job action is stated to be
made public next week.
