ited for By Marcie Good Contributing Writer IF you’re one of these drivers who thinks speed liraits don’t apply to you, who whizzes through school zones or neighbourhoods, or who thumbs your nose at people who are trying to slow down traffic, Lynn Robb wants you. The coordinator of the Speed Watch program in Edgemont has lots of time for volunteer work at the com- munity policing station. But he has no time for carciess speeders. “Some people drive by and give us a special salute,” he said, of the volun- teers who patrol heavy traffic zones. “Then two blocks down the street they get pulled over by a cop. Those are the ones we love to nail.” Robb, who received an award from ICBC on Tuesday to recognize his efforts on improving road safety, initi- ated. the program at the Edgemont Community Policing Station two years ago. He and two other volunteers, Irvin Zipursky and Armen Petztik, take tums spending the day in the RCMP van with a radar gun anda board that tells motorists how fast iiiey are going. Sometimes they work together, with police waiting down the road ta catch drivers who don’t heed the warning. Bur thase rude drivers make up less than 1%, says Robb, who has a penchant for statistics. Mosr spesders are fust preoccupied, and not thinking about their driving. “They look at the board and say ‘Whoops, I'm going a little bit too fast’,” he said. People who arc concerned about speeding in their neighbourhoods are also very appreciative. Robb says he parks the van in one woman’s drive- way, who brings him a cup of coffee and a scone in the morning. The presence of the radar board and the Speed Watch van, which was donated by the North Vancouver District has contributed to a signifi- cant slowing of cratic. Statistics show a 20% drop in speeds in the Capilano area over the ume the program has operated. Four days a week they report to - “hot spots,” places where residents have complained about speeding.
