The 10-year-old eatery on the north side of the 2400- block Marine Drive sports an inviting sidewalk patio which was einpry for obvious weath- er-related reasons during win- ter. "Viechald says he cagerly anticipates the completion of construction across the street. Parking will eventually return to normal and more people will come to the area. He hopes they'll bring with them appetites tor Dundarave Cafe's menu. Among the most popu- lar items, he says, are fish and chips, hamburgers, baked camembert and lamb chanks. Dundarave Cafe is the main ground-floor tenant of the red-and-white edifice built by WJ. Invin in 1913. In the carly days it was known as Conservative Hail = and Dundarave Hall and hosted public mectings and exhibi- tions, plus the odd badminton match. These days, Wiechold is hoping to turn the restaurant in one of Dundarave’s most- recognized structures into a neighbourhood pub. A previ- ous owner tried in 1982 and failed, but Wiechold is confi- dent now is the time. Looki L'Image Esthetics, Marianne Vavaris says her business is simple. “We make people feel good about themselves,” Vavaris says. Whether it’s a manicure, pedicure, ear can- dling, clectroly- sis, eve brow and lash care, aro- matherapy or reflexology, Vavaris says L*Image does it. “We're a full- service esthetics spa offering vari- ous services to clients — men, women and children,” she says. “We do house calls, we go to hospitals.” L’Image has supplied Aveda-brand products and services for seven years. “Clients always tell us when they walk in the doors that there’s a sense of peace. Hope is one of the quali- ties needed to make the ideal batch of vino. Yender love and care is another. And then there's patience. Store owner Diane Schwitzer says she’s impressed by the customers who stop by on a regular basis during the six-week process. “We have customers who White Rock 531-8733 come in and check on their wine. They say how’s it doing? How’s it progressing?” Schwitzer says it’s all worth it in the end when customers bortle their creations and head home for their first raste. Schwitzer was a part-time employee of the four-year-old business. She bought the store last December. It’s almost like working at a pet shop, she admits, because each 23-litre jug is a living creature that matures at its own rate. “They're tenacious,” she says. “Wine is really fun to work with, it’s going to do its own thing.” Schwitzer’s favorite vari- eties are fume blanc and caber- net merlot. “Wine is very sub- jective,” she says. The do-it-yourself’ store is one of three shops in a 65- year-old building that once housed an antiques store and a tearoom. Friendly needles If Ingrid McManus, sense of humour isn't enough to bring customers back to her Knit and Stitch Shoppe, surely life- time knitting lessons will. For $65, anyone can sign up for the bargain offer, which ensures McManus a steady stream of customers. Knit and Stitch has been around since 1971 when it was a chain of five stores. The current location is the Jast one left and was originally in Park Royal. “We love it, we're the only wool store on the North Shore,” McManus says. “We carry the more quality yarns from around the world, as oO d to Wal-Mart.” Poh walls are lined with balls of yarn from every hue of the rainbow. Owner McManus and = manager Kathleen Johnson stock 249 different kinds of wool. Luckily, they’ve always been too busy to ponder exactly how many times all the yarn in store would stretch around the globe. “T think about it every now and then,” McManus admits. But, adds Johnson: “We're not like the paper clip people, we don’t get bored enough.” “We just knit,” says McManus. From paints to S Surniek Statibnery is the new kid on the block. After seven years in Ambleside, the office and artists, supplies store moved to Dundarave a little more than a year ago. “We have a lot of cus- tomers in Ambleside who know us well,” says owner Julita Ong. “Some of the cus- tomers have followed us.” Sunmark has everything from pairts to paper clips in its triangle-shaped retail space. The store even offers cus- tomers free Christian pam- phlets and tracts, a reflection of the beliefs of Ong and her daughter and manager Kathy. “That’s very important to us,” Ong says.
