Too hard, too soft, too hot, too
cold ... Just right. Goldilocks
shopped around. :

Some of you may be thinking of
"enrolling, or enrolling someone, in a

driver’s education course in the near
future. Without shamelessly plug- .
ging my own driver training facility
or extravagantly expounding its
merits, I'd like to offer a bit of
advice to help you find the school
that best fits your needs.

First off, the axiom “You get

_ what you pay for” applies.

_ There a many surprisingly inex-
pensive driving schools in the
Lower Mainland, a few of which
serve the North Shore. Low cost is

, usually a sign of a small company
with a low overhead: one or two
cars, an office at home, small print
ad in the yellow pages, that sort of
thing. Often the owner is the
instructor, which is a great way of
ensuring quality control:
Presumably, the instructor will do
everything in his power to please
clients simply because kindly refer-
rals are a great source of new busi-
ness. ‘

Unfortunately, many schools,
I’ve noticed, concentrate solely on
the Road Test area around Central .

the fact that their instructors know .
the actual test route and will show it
to you over and over until you have
it memorized!

While this may sound wonderful
to some, please remember that you
are likely to be completely bewil-
dered if you ever have to travel
more than a few blocks from this
area. §

At the other end of the Driving
School spectrum are the high-priced

facilities. With these you are invari- .

ably guaranteed excellent instructors
and a quality program. However,
you may also be paying for a fleet
of cars that sits dormant for half the
year and a big advertising budget. ”

Also, and to add to your wari-
ness, you should know that due to
totally unexpected and bnutal
changes to Division 27 of the Motor
Vehicle Act, school operators are no
longer required to have any practical
training experience. Which is to say,
anyone who completes an 80-hour
Driving Instructor's course today
can now open their own school
tomorrow. :

As for these folks who paid
upward of $2,000 in bribe money
for a B.C. Driver's License — I
don’t get it. At Upper Levels
Driving School, $2,000 buys rough-
ly 62 hours of driving lessons; in 62
hours I could teach Goldilocks and
three bears how to race Indy cars.
